Paul Motian passed away a week ago and Fresh Air had a nice tribute/older interview that hit upon Bill Evans, Monk, and Keith Jarrett. Worth a listen.

"I'm not a showpiece drummer. ... I feel like I'm an accompanist. It's my sort of thing to make the other people sound good, as good as they can be. I feel like I should accompany them, and I should accompany the sound that I am hearing and make it the best that I can — that I can do."

Sad to see him go this is a great reminder to go out and see the jazz legends. He was great when I saw him a few years ago at the Vanguard and seemed years younger than his age when behind the drum kit.
