Voltron Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 http://remhq.com/new...ory.php?id=1446 Bummer, but it was an awesome ride for those guys. I'm going to play Chronic Town/Murmer and Collapse Into Now to mark their passing.
ironbut Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 Wow,.. 31 years? I'll be spinning "Life's Rich Pageant" today. That one really hits home for me.
Voltron Posted September 21, 2011 Author Report Posted September 21, 2011 Wow,.. 31 years? I'll be spinning "Life's Rich Pageant" today. That one really hits home for me. I might have to add that one into the mix because it is a truly wonderful album.
Hopstretch Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 Many fine albums, yes. Highly influential band. Not so much lately.
The Monkey Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 Wow,.. 31 years? I'll be spinning "Life's Rich Pageant" today. That one really hits home for me. This.
blessingx Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 Haven't listened to them in years, but was my first real concert and first band to see twice. Will be curious what Peter Buck does next.
The Monkey Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 it was my Dad who got me into REM. I remember listening to "Reckoning" esp. "Pretty Persuasion" and thinking, no one else sounds like this.
manaox2 Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 I was just looking up song lyrics by them not a day ago. Glad that I was able to see them in concert when I got the chance.
swt61 Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 I'm actually happy to see a great band call it quits before they become stale. IMO the Stones should have done so a few decades back. I'd hate to think of R.E.M. as anything but great.
Voltron Posted September 21, 2011 Author Report Posted September 21, 2011 I agree with you, Steve, but it is still a bit sad to see a band that was key to your youth call it quits. As a buddy of mine said when I emailed him, getting old sucks.
blessingx Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 Everyone but me probably knew this years ago, but only found out a week back Cobain listened to Automatic for the People before pulling the trigger.
aerius Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 They pretty much lost me with "Reveal" and I haven't bought any of their newer albums, though I always went to their concerts when they came by my area. R.E.M. was the first band I really got into, I still have a couple of their albums in the original LP release, "Reckoning" on vinyl absolutely kills the CD version. It's been a long trip with a ton of amazing & influencial music along the way, I think they made the right choice. It was time.
blessingx Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 R.E.M. In the Real World - Rolling Stone's 1987 Cover Story. Reprinted on day of their breakup: http://t.co/5yTLH0k6
LFF Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 Bummer...never got to see them live....
swt61 Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 I agree with you, Steve, but it is still a bit sad to see a band that was key to your youth call it quits. As a buddy of mine said when I emailed him, getting old sucks. It's always sad to lose a piece of your youth. But IMO they went out in style. And as a buddy of mine said, "it's better than the alternative". R.E.M. was one of the top bands of the 80's for me, and possibly one of the top 100 bands of all time. Have fun in your next endeavors guys!
skullguise Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 Have to say, I wasn't the biggest fan of their last several albums. I respected the hell out of them, but the first two will always be my faves. Maybe because of the time they were done, and my age and place in life..... Still, an great indelible mark on music history!
Currawong Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 Damn. One of my favourite bands in the past too. A relative of mine knows the band (from when she was living in Athens), so I might have to see if she has heard the news.
blessingx Posted November 14, 2011 Report Posted November 14, 2011 So were they friends? Still can't tell. REM interview: 'There's a good chance we'll never play together again' | http://ow.ly/1AlQN0
