tyrion Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Sounds like it's time for a trip to SoFla.
Knuckledragger Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Being a somewhat paranoidal New Englander of Vineyard descent, I am already overstocked with canned goods. I drew off a few gallons of drinking water this afternoon, and I'm going to do several times that this evening for toilet flushing (I have an electric well, not town water). I also have two new bottles of Scotch and a whole stack of cigars in case the power (or worse yet, the INTERNET) goes out. I took the AC out of the window (boy, that sucked) and battened down all the hatches I could. I'm more concerned about flooding than I am high winds. I moved all my lighting equipment and anything else of value to higher elevation in the basement. Now I'm going to hit one grocery store and see how thoroughly it's picked over by other paranoidal New Englanders. As per usual, the greatest danger is other people.
cetoole Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 You are supposed to take the AC out of your window? Ugh, do not want to do that, but I guess I will if its important.
boomana Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Egad! Have to say I was greatly relieved when it's path veered away from here, but this is sounding pretty horrible for way too many people. Stay safe, folks.
Dreadhead Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 (edited) Buy house on Monday..... Have eartquake 30 miles away on Tuesday.... And now a fucking hurricane on Saturday...... awesome Edited August 27, 2011 by Dreadhead
shellylh Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Definitely fill up buckets of water (or bathtub) to flush the toilet if necessary! You may not need to do it but if you lose water pressure, you will definitely be glad you did. Also, I would get a few gallon bottles of water and freeze them. You can put them in your fridge to keep it cold for a few days if you lose power.
n_maher Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 In NH we've already had a 100 year and 500 year flood events in the last 10 years, I'm sure Irene isn't goin to be fun but isn't forecast to best those marks. We'll see Sunday I guess. Stay safe NYC'ers.
The Monkey Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Left the Hamptons this afternoon along with everyone else. Packed up for a couple of days at my MIL's palce because our neighborhood in NYC is being evacuated. Fuck.
Salt Peanuts Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 ^ I read that as "at my MILF's place." Stay safe, Dinny. We're mostly papered for the worst (still need to move few things in the basement bit higher or out of it) but hoping all the prepping will be for naught.
Torpedo Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Sorry Dinny. Hopefully there're little to no damages, read this morning that it was losing strength and winds had gone down from 175Km/h to 145 Km/h, which still is high, but more "manageable". Best wishes.
The Monkey Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 ^ I read that as "at my MILF's place." lol. Not so much.
Currawong Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Best of luck to everyone affected. We get this every year in Japan, thought the last couple of years they've passed somewhat south of me, so I've only been through a super-serious one once. Was enough to shake our re-enforced concrete apartment block significantly, which was a bit scary. It's the heavy rain that can do the serious damage indeed, though I had a friend who went out the next morning to find his carport completely missing without trace.
justin Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Went to two grocery stores and one liquor store. Stores had lines for 50-75 per register and the liquor store had cars backed up out onto the street waiting to get into the parking lot. All I wanted was some steaks and beer for the weekend and I came home empty handed. there's always Chinese food. they never close.
VPI Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Went to the store this morning. Luckily I was able to fill my Diet Dr. Pepper drawer so I should be fine.

You can put them in your fridge to keep it cold for a few days if you lose power. This is excellent advice. We used to fill up the bathtubs and a large plastic garbage pail with water and have buckets to use for flushing. You don't want to run out of water for flushing.
manaox2 Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Hurricane has passed officially I believe. The advice in this thread was great, especially remembering past hurricane experiences. There were some wind gusts and a little rain, but it wasn't spectacular on my side of the county. I wish you all the same. Also, my brother on the beach is fine. He was 15 miles away from the beginning of the most damaged areas, so I still feel he was very lucky that it brushed by.
NightWoundsTime Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 (edited) Good luck all. I bet the NYC contingent is already without power. Never thought I'd be thinking about Gene in a hurricane, at least not when he's in Maine . And yes I do follow storms for fun. Just watched the George Carlin bit on wishing disasters would go huge and out of control. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tceH2RS6V5I Edited August 28, 2011 by NightWoundsTime
Dreadhead Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 (edited) Power is back.... Edited August 28, 2011 by Dreadhead
The Monkey Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 Power fine here in Manhattan, but worried about flooding in battery park city. 1
GPH Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 Irene's getting here now. It's supposed to rain a lot later this afternoon, but nothing like what you guys got on the US east coast.
Knuckledragger Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 *sigh* Just checked the basement, and the foundation is holding fine. Unfortunately, the space by my front door is leaking again. The contractor who installed the door has been back TWICE to stop the leaking and clearly failed both times.
VPI Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 Just rain and a little wind here. No flooding here on this side of the River.
