luvdunhill Posted July 5, 2011 Report Posted July 5, 2011 What kind of quantities do they consider worth it to bother? 1000? 10,000? probably around $100K for the dual parts would be my guess, from speaking with them.
charlo89 Posted July 5, 2011 Report Posted July 5, 2011 I am preparing a 3D modelisation (google sketchup) of the amp. I would like to know the dimentions of boards: off/on heatsink and the PSU. After, I will propose a groupe build for a custom Hifi 2000 3U chassis (with external heatsink or not) made by Modu. thanks
kevin gilmore Posted July 5, 2011 Report Posted July 5, 2011 power supply is 9 x 7.5 inches, heatsinks along the long side. amp with on board heatsinks is 8.25 x 6.25 inches amp for side mounting is 7.2 x 3.9 inches
wink Posted July 6, 2011 Report Posted July 6, 2011 Is it possible to allow for more room for a larger transformer for those who like a little larger current output for better regulation, full encapsulation etc.?
livewire Posted July 6, 2011 Report Posted July 6, 2011 (edited) Of course it's possible! Just put it all in a bigger box. Or if one wants to keep their outboard heatsink creation "slimline" they could do a two box build with umbilicle. (then hide that ugly, oversized psu box and voila! you have a purty little kgsshv amp, kinda like a bhse without tubes.) just my 2cents.... FWIW, my KGSSHV is a "big box build". It has all onboard heatsinks in a ParMetal 16X16X4 inch case. I just upgraded the wimpy dual 475V @ 100ma 4" diameter donut to a dual 500V @ 400ma 5.5" diameter monster. BIG overkill here, but more importantly, there aint no more room inside my case. Just to give you an idea of the spacial limitations for this build in a single case. Here I go crappin on Lil Knight's thread again. Sorry! ~125 KGSSHV's and counting.... Edited July 6, 2011 by livewire

PICaudio Posted July 6, 2011 Report Posted July 6, 2011 I added 1 set of Dynafet and more PSUs Please make a prototype and have someone test it. 100 boards is too big of a risk in my opinion. +1 -- o -- Rodrigo
charlo89 Posted July 6, 2011 Report Posted July 6, 2011 I have no idea of the price of boards, overall, a set for a kgsshv will be how much? according to price, my number of boards will vary.
justin Posted July 7, 2011 Report Posted July 7, 2011 What kind of quantities do they consider worth it to bother? 1000? 10,000? just did an estimate and i would have used about 1,750 2SJ109 total, since I started with Gilmore's designs almost a decade ago. Hardly puts a dent in anything. if they could do a 2SK389 + 2SJ109 totally matched and put it on a SOIC-8 now that would have my attention.
livewire Posted July 7, 2011 Report Posted July 7, 2011 (edited) if they could do a 2SK389 + 2SJ109 totally matched and put it on a SOIC-8 now that would have my attention. Yeah, but wouldn't you need more than eight pinouts? If they were to keep the devices "discreet" it would require 12 leads. Tying the complimentary N & P gates together internally would still require 10 leads. If the sources were also connected together along with internal limiting resistors, it could be done with 8 leads. The last two options would limit the use of the SOIC device for other designer's parameters. I'm a little drunk. I think I'll shutup now. Edited July 7, 2011 by livewire
livewire Posted July 7, 2011 Report Posted July 7, 2011 how thick will these boards be? If I were to guess, industry standard for this kind of stuff would be 1/16 of an inch thick.(~.062)
kevin gilmore Posted July 7, 2011 Report Posted July 7, 2011 Can do a run of teflon or arlon boards. Then gold plate everything. You won't like the price.
El_Doug Posted July 7, 2011 Report Posted July 7, 2011 (edited) Can do a run of teflon or arlon boards. Then gold plate everything. You won't like the price. but won't the teflon make the sound more neutral, while the gold adds lushness? edit: adding a "" to qualify the statement Edited July 7, 2011 by El_Doug
kevin gilmore Posted July 7, 2011 Report Posted July 7, 2011 Speaking of silly, omron just released a new relay compatible with the step attenuator. VSWR of 1.1 at 1GHZ. So we could up the frequency response of the step attenuator from 400mhz to 1GHZ...
spritzer Posted July 7, 2011 Report Posted July 7, 2011 You won't like the price. ...and when has that ever stopped us?
kevin gilmore Posted July 7, 2011 Report Posted July 7, 2011 The arlon boards are about $150 each in 6 layers The relays are $25 each You can spend silly amounts of money on the resistors. So say $1000 per balanced channel is not out of the question. This is certainly going to slow down most people.
Currawong Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 Is this the point I start investigating how cheap I can get RK-50s here?
wink Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 Is this the point I start investigating how cheap I can get RK-50s here? . Obnviously the answer is YES..!!
kevin gilmore Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 RK50's and the P&G units are the best analog pots available. RK50 can be put on a circuit board, the P&G have to be hand wired.
spritzer Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 The P&G is also only available in 10K with a 20K custom order. Not really an issue except for crazy people like me who use and like a NOS dac and tube CDP's...
