deepak Posted June 4, 2011 Report Posted June 4, 2011 Any recommendations for cheap HDMI to optical converters? Something like this is what I'm looking for, but less than $170 http://www.octavainc.com/HDMI%201x1%20Audio%20Converter.html Basically looking to convert all my single layer SACDs to 24/88 PCM and this box aids in that with the appropriate Oppo player.
recstar24 Posted June 4, 2011 Report Posted June 4, 2011 My gut says monoprice would have something. And for cheap.
Dusty Chalk Posted June 4, 2011 Report Posted June 4, 2011 I got nothing, but do please report on your results, I would most definitely follow suit.
dsavitsk Posted June 4, 2011 Report Posted June 4, 2011 (edited) I was always under the belief that spdif was just one of the things carried by the hdmi cable, and that you could just open up a cable and break it out. Maybe the issue is telling the source that there is something connected at all? This one is a little cheaper: http://www.amazon.com/SPDIF-Component-Ypbpr-Converter-v1-3b/dp/B002SFT3ZI Edited June 4, 2011 by dsavitsk

I'm not sure if it is possible to use a modified HDMI cable off the Oppo. The way these are ripped the digital is never converted to analog. If I do end up doing this, I'll make it a free service for any Casers.
acidbasement Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 There's this one as well: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/1080p-4-port-hdmi-input-to-hdmi-optical-coaxial-audio-output-converter-100-240v-ac-16553 A few bucks more, but free shipping, and it does optical and coax out.
Emooze Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 Did a little looking and SPDIF isn't carried by the HDMI cable. The video and the audio share the same data lines so you need to have some active components to split up the two streams. The amazon one looks to be the least expensive and I think its funny that right in the details it says "Does not support AppleTV" and then there's one reviewer who is complaining that it doesn't work with his AppleTV...
Dreadhead Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 I have a HDFury2 to do this task but I never got it to work with my oppo other than to set the Oppo to 16/44.1 as my GEQ doesn't support anything more than a 24/96.
blessingx Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 Resurrecting as I have a similar need, but in reverse. Anyone know of a spdif (toslink or coax) to HDMI converter/adapter?
