I've chanced on an accident shortly after it has happened too. And you know what - if you were a few minutes earlier.....is what it goes though my head. The only biggy I've been personally involved with was back in 1991. I braked into traffic on black ice, and slewed out of control into the rear wheel cluster of an oil tanker. Blew his rear wheels and buckled his wheel rims. Blocked the whole freeway (the A1, UK). Got away with front impact whiplash. So I went out that evening and had the biggest steak and most expensive bottle of wine in celebration of being alive. 3
ironbut Posted April 3, 2016 Report Posted April 3, 2016 The whole scene was so dark that, if it weren't for having to slow down and stop, I might not have seen half of the wrecked cars or any of the people who were standing there in the median. I did pick up a rib eye and artichokes today! 2

At first I wasn't sure if it might have been just a two car fender bender but as traffic screeched to a craw I began to see that glass was across all 6 lanes of freeway. Everyone funneled into single file (I was third in line) and I saw a mangled car on the right shoulder. The lead car stopped and put on his flashers. He got out of his car and picked up something and dragged it across all 6 lanes to the shoulder. It was the wheel and brake assembly that must've been blocking the lane. Thinking about it later, we should have all just parked there and waited for the cops. While we were stopped, I could see a couple more cars that were involved. One on the median with several people standing around (I'm guessing they hit that wheel) and one on the shoulder that was totally twisted (where the wheel came from?). I got off on the exit that was just a few yards down the freeway and started to see and hear emergency vehicles responding. It looked really bad and I'm sure the freeway was closed for a while but I haven't seen anything in the news yet. It was totally scary and I hope nobody was seriously injured! Glad you weren't in the accident!
Augsburger Posted April 4, 2016 Report Posted April 4, 2016 Glad you are OK and here to tell the story. As they say, "timing is everything". 1
MexicanDragon Posted April 14, 2016 Report Posted April 14, 2016 I had a long weekend so stopped by to help the saxophonists out in my daughter's school band. I wound up sitting in for jazz band today and running it when the sub didn't show. I got asked to sit in with the band for an art show gig with them on Saturday so the teacher could play something other than sax to fill out the band better. Zoë was super excited for me to help out, which after the shit year she's had, well, was just glad I could find a way to make her happy. After work I went out with Xavier on a 17.5 mile group ride. 35 miles since Sunday, which is quite a bit for a ten year old over two rides, IMO. He's killin' it. **BRENT** 2
naamanf Posted April 14, 2016 Report Posted April 14, 2016 Good things do happen when you stay away from our delicious biscuits. 1
guzziguy Posted April 14, 2016 Report Posted April 14, 2016 Brent always stays away from biscuits. Or should I say, biscuits stay away from Brent.
MexicanDragon Posted April 16, 2016 Report Posted April 16, 2016 So there was a bar doing a promotion with Dogfish Head for Record Store Day; they're doing a pre-party, and another place pretty close to me is doing a big party all day tomorrow. The place tonight was doing a "bring your own vinyl" thing. Well, one dude brought stuff, and he brought like, 2-3 albums. I brought maybe 30-40 that I thought may have a song or two, or be interesting to someone. I started pulling out stuff like Dangermouse - The Gray Album and Linkin Park & Jay-Z - Collision Course and the bartenders went a little nuts. I brought out the 20th anniversary of Fugees - The Score and they dug it hard. I pulled out Rocky Horror and I had two people come up and ask me if I'd sell it, then many a fist-bump over some Ghostbusters them song Dub remix. Turns out all the bartenders had seen Flaming Lips live, so they lost it over the autographed "With A Little Help From My Fwends" album. I walked out of there having DJed for 4 hours (1 was just for staff and their friends while they cleaned the place) and having quite a few conversations and got a couple business cards. I ALMOST didn't go out, but pretty glad I did. That was a fun night; it's so rare that I get to share music with others. I've been invited back with control of their house music system. How bad is it that I want to bring in some vintage speakers that I have access to for free and revamping the soundsystem to sound good while the bar is full? **BRENT** 8
Hopstretch Posted April 17, 2016 Report Posted April 17, 2016 Last night I dreamed I attended a travel team event and we all visited a specialist whisky store, where I became overly refreshed. Next morning, I found that you fuckers had taken me to a tattooist, who photo-realistically reproduced the facade of the store on the palm of my left hand. Everybody seemed to agree that this would be a brilliant memento. Then we went to get poutine. 16
Voltron Posted April 17, 2016 Report Posted April 17, 2016 Post of the year/decade. I wish Stretch was at every travel team event, tattoos or not. 6
jvlgato Posted April 17, 2016 Report Posted April 17, 2016 Wow, that sounds so realistic! When you woke up, did you look at your hand to be sure you didn't actually have a tattoo?!
swt61 Posted April 17, 2016 Report Posted April 17, 2016 Never ask a man what's in his hand when he wakes up! 5
cetoole Posted April 18, 2016 Report Posted April 18, 2016 Drove a RHD car for the first time. If you are anywhere in the uk, might I suggest staying indoors for the next few days? Preferably places with thick walls. Or maybe visit some out of country relatives. Or strangers. Or anyone. That was terrifying. Especially when my phone wouldn't get signal, and I did a tour of all the small towns around heathrow. At rush hour. 7
VPI Posted April 18, 2016 Report Posted April 18, 2016 Outside of remembering which side of the car to get into, it is really not that difficult, if you have an automatic. Driving. I found driving a LHD car on the wrong side of the road in St. Thomas the following week to be more difficult for some reason. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
shellylh Posted April 21, 2016 Report Posted April 21, 2016 Went to talk by Ellen Malcolm, the founder of Emily's list. It's weird to be a room with so many women (for me), but cool too. 1
skullguise Posted April 21, 2016 Report Posted April 21, 2016 Still in NY on college trips, and on the roads from Syracuse to Potsdam (Clarkson), we passed: Mexico Philadelphia Antwerp Seemingly predominant population: sheep, cows, horses. And earlier in the trip, we passed a sign for "Multzes Kill" NY....you are weird. After Clarkson, we go to hippie-land Burlington, Vermont for a UVM visit. Then home..... BTW: anyone ever visiting or near Syracuse NEEDS to go to Dinosaur BBQ. So freaking good! Been years since I've been in TX or other places with great BBQ, this one was awesome! 5
Voltron Posted April 22, 2016 Report Posted April 22, 2016 My daughter is at Clarkson today and tomorrow for a student competition presenting her grey water system for a sustainable campus laundry. Funny coincidence. 11
Knuckledragger Posted April 24, 2016 Report Posted April 24, 2016 Heading out the door to drive to the Vineyard for the first time in 3 1/2 years. 3
skullguise Posted April 24, 2016 Report Posted April 24, 2016 (edited) Enjoy Dan! Al, I saw the larger competition @ Clarkson, but didn't have a chance to go in and look further..... Andrew liked Clarkson a lot. Tour guide's greatest quote: "...there are a lot of weird people here....but it's a REALLY GOOD weird....." It's way the fuck in the middle of nowhere though (even though it's close to the aforementioned Mexico, Philadelphia, and Antwerp. And Stockholm, too) Edited April 24, 2016 by skullguise 1
VPI Posted April 24, 2016 Report Posted April 24, 2016 Yeah the Dinosaur up there is much better than the one in NYC. Burlington has been pretty great the times I have visited. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Salt Peanuts Posted April 25, 2016 Report Posted April 25, 2016 Woke up to find the home button on my iPhone not responding. Eventually figured out that if I squeeze it like a vice, I can get it to respond. I'm due for an upgrade (toting around a 5 here), but hopefully it'll get me by till the fall when 7 comes out.
aardvark baguette Posted April 25, 2016 Report Posted April 25, 2016 if you use any 2 factor apps, back that shit up. my god, you dont want to have to go through restoring them another way. takes weeks.
Grand Enigma Posted April 25, 2016 Report Posted April 25, 2016 It is super annoying having to authentic authenticator apps then having to set them back up because there is no other way to do so then being at a desktop browser. After which you can finally login to something like LastPass so you can finally sign-in to some stupid two-factor app. 2
oogabooga Posted April 25, 2016 Report Posted April 25, 2016 1Password can store the initial two-factor authenticator key and generate one-time passwords just like Google Authenticator. However, it can also be backed up and syncs across devices (I have 1P on my Mac and iPhone) so I can get a one-time password from either. Perhaps its slightly less secure, but its a small penalty to pay for a lot of convenience.
