Grahame Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 (edited) Grahame, I thought we agreed you wouldn't call me Shirley again, at least spell it correctly! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0A5t5_O8hdA Edited January 31, 2012 by Grahame
crappyjones123 Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 I filed day before yesterday. Nice healthy deposit to my bank soon.
Dreadhead Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 (edited) Filed mine just now. Going to pay down most of my boat Edited January 31, 2012 by Dreadhead
morphsci Posted January 31, 2012 Author Report Posted January 31, 2012 You guys suck, we never get a refund.
shellylh Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 My hope is to not have to pay a penalty.
Salt Peanuts Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 I wish we can file ours now, but we're still waiting on few more paperworks (as usual), then gotta make an appointment with our tax lady (I no longer do it myself since it's wee bit complicated with crap-load of paperwork now with retirements/investments/etc).
Dreadhead Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 You guys suck, we never get a refund. well we do withholding with no deductions so that we always get a refund. Worked out it costs me 60 bucks a year in lost interest.
Grahame Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 This interests me. Why do people think that lending their money to the government (and the state) for the year, and then getting it back at the end, without any interest is a good idea? Whereas keeping your own money, and only giving what you owe ( and not a dollar more) at the end of the year is a bad thing? People lack the financial discipline not to spend money that won't be theirs? Getting money you couldn't be bothered to track is a nice surprise?
grawk Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 Because the lost interest is insignificant compared to the inconvenience of having to come up with money at the end of the year if something happens during the year to change my tax burden.
morphsci Posted January 31, 2012 Author Report Posted January 31, 2012 We have had a lot of income fluctuation (mostly in a good way) so it has been relatively difficult to get things evened out. Our goal is to come out with zero dollars owed or overpaid.
Dreadhead Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 +2 the lost interest is less than I spend on lunches in the average week. Not with the worry and effort.
jvlgato Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 I wish we can file ours now, but we're still waiting on few more paperworks (as usual), then gotta make an appointment with our tax lady (I no longer do it myself since it's wee bit complicated with crap-load of paperwork now with retirements/investments/etc). ^This. Plus running a small business adds complications. I never know what will happen year to year. I could get a refund, I could owe money, who knows? The net income from my private practice varies so much, it is really hard to predict. Plus we pay for 'domestic help' (kid's sitter) and mistakenly wanted to be on the up and up, so now are stuck dealing with unemployment benefits, Medicare, who the hell knows what else. Should've just paid her cash like everyone else. I just send it all in to the accountant and do what he tells me to do.
luvdunhill Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 well we do withholding with no deductions so that we always get a refund. Worked out it costs me 60 bucks a year in lost interest. I have 9 allowances (would go more but not sure what HP would have to file with the IRS) and I always get a refund.
Grahame Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 OK, Given penalty's, and unknowable income / costs avoiding a known downside, for a sub optimal upside seems a reasonable trade off. It's almost as if they ( or their lobbyists ) designed it that way.
Dreadhead Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 I have 9 allowances (would go more but not sure what HP would have to file with the IRS) and I always get a refund. That would not work out for us but I'm glad it does for you. I was just stating what I did not that it's the only way to get a refund.
Dreadhead Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 (edited) ^ Congrats ? Woke up coughing (which I have done for the last 2 weeks) and saw that my e-file had been rejected because turbotax online can not figure out how to fill in form 8938 and even though I filled the fields it asked for in it was not filled in correctly by the software. After I figured out that the form wasn't even required I have re-filed mytaxes. Edited February 1, 2012 by Dreadhead
mrarroyo Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 The W2 was prepared incorrectly by my employer for a non-disclosed number of employees. Waiting for the revised form so I can file. This is fun!
mikeymad Posted February 2, 2012 Report Posted February 2, 2012 MICHAEL LAUNDERING. TO CLEAN...NO, UH, HERE IT IS. TO CHANNEL MONEY THROUGH A SOURCE OR BY AN INTERMEDIARY. SAMIR It doesn't really help us, Michael. PETER Ok. We're looking up money laundering in a dictionary. MICHAEL Yeah, well, you guys can both eat my ass, ok?
HeadphoneAddict Posted February 2, 2012 Report Posted February 2, 2012 I started 2 weeks ago, I just had to wait for the forms to go final to submit them... Yeah, I only need one more 1099 and one mortgage statement before I can file. I might still beat last year by a week, if they show up soon.
Maxvla Posted February 2, 2012 Report Posted February 2, 2012 Did my taxes a couple weeks ago. Took me about 10 minutes with the 1040EZ and state form. Being single, simple, and boring has it's advantages.. sometimes.
jvlgato Posted February 2, 2012 Report Posted February 2, 2012 Stayed employed (again) Grats! Was this in doubt?
Pars Posted February 2, 2012 Report Posted February 2, 2012 When they do large downsizings, its always in doubt.
acidbasement Posted February 2, 2012 Report Posted February 2, 2012 I'm sort of a grad student again! My supervisor found a small bit of money and told me to finish Chapter 1 by end of March, and Chapter 2 by end of May. Payment on delivery. Now my wife can look after the kids for a few months, and not have to leave them with me while she gets a job. Head-case, your collective duty is to tell me to get back to work whenever you see me posting in the daylight hours, unless it's in the "what are you drinking" thread. Glad to hear you're still employed, Pars!
