Yo, Cocteau Twins fans.

One of my favorite esoteric music jokes from the great Sanjeev Kohli:

"Little known facts about them -- they were not actually twins, but they did have cocks for toes."

Fine follow on Twitter @govindajeggy. Nobody does worse puns.

Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus (Remastered)

Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus (Remastered)
Charles Mingus
1960

Example:

Good performance. But also made him sound like kind of a dick. Don't applaud, don't make any noise, just sit there and shut up and listen we are busy up here.

That's something that I've noticed in most of his recordings, they way they're mixed giving him prominence, the cover pictures... His live performances seem to reinforce that feeling of a guy being too glad of meeting himself for he's so important. Whatever, a fine musician nonetheless.

So I came across this EP in my queue (I have a lot of things in my Q)

Sola

Sola
Melissa Parmenter
2021

I liked it - which led me to her last Album:

Messapica

Messapica
Melissa Parmenter
2020

Example:

The Albums only problems is that it is short. Delicate pieces with lovely melody and structure.

And then I just played the next thing in the queue - just happen to be another short album.

Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90, MWV N 16 "Italian"

Orpheus Chamber Orchestra
2021

Example - People like the first movement - I like the last:

A very good modern performance. It may not be my go to for this work, but it good.

The new Heilung album, Drif.  Enjoying it, a little more polished and less primal in many songs, compared to their other albums.  So far, very good but not great....I'm sure it'll grow on me some more.

Would it surprise you to learn that she's done some soundtrack work?  Probably not.

And production, apparently.

High School friend posted a bit of video, she was seeing these folks live.  Fun Surf-Horror-Rock band from St. Petersburg.  They have quite the output, apparently having been around since 1998 in one form or another.  So checking some stuff out.  Several songs are kind of Dick Dale meets Vincent Price 😄

Vanessa Carlton

Example:

So this song came up the other day - As it does in life:

And it is still an awesome bop. So it got me wondering what is up with Vanessa these days. Still making music. She had a 2020 release (above). It was a good listen. I enjoyed the playing and the production a lot. It would be interesting to go see her with just a piano and keyboard setup.

Over all I like the vibe of it. New to me. Let us know if there is something else in the catalog to check out, that is on your list.

Also new to me.

Melodic Death Metal. I didn't know I need this in my life, now I do. Kind of a Metal supergroup from a collection of good players.

@mikeymad, for Heilung any of their previous stuff is good IMO.  More "primitive," with some plodding but somehow involving percussion.  Ofnir (2015), Futha (2019), and the live album Lifa (2017)....all have received some heavy rotation.

Not every song hits my ears and tastebuds well, but overall have liked it a lot.
