Was listening to Queen's 1977 album News of the World and reflecting on its cover art.

The cover art was done by Kelly Freas, based on his cover for the October 1953 issue of Astounding Science Fiction.

There's an alternative cover for NotW, which was also inside the gatefold on some versions:

Freas' artwork is kind of creepy, unsettling, quite vintage looking but also weirdly futuristic.  I remember seeing it as a kid and not being sure what to make of it.

The music is pretty spectacular as well.

Don't Look Back

Don't Look Back
Boston
1978

Example:

My friend and I were talking the other day about Boston (as you do), and we were saying that we don't seem to get to the other albums because Boston Boston exists. So, because I now have a streaming service, I immediately added Don't Look Back to my queue.  I have to say any track could be added to their first album. For their sophomore release it is very good.

Quote
You Never Know, which was mostly recorded live in the studio to analog tape with minimal overdubs, is thoughtful, possesses substance, is consistently imaginative... and fun.

I very much agree.

Oooh, I see Medeski and Fiuczynski (I've been listening to a lot of Hiromi lately, and the latter is a frequent collaborator), very interested, thank you for mentioning it.

Months later, I finish another track...temp mix while a friend does a real pass on it. Made this with the mega-modular rig.

Whoa!  You're getting some really great piano-like transients -- is that really modular?!?!?  I'd love for you to share some recipes/visuals...did you ever think of streaming this/Twitch.tv kind of thing?  You'd probably have an instant audience, and I don't just mean head-case (muffwigglers/modwigglers/&c.).

I'm using a multisampled piano played by the Super Disting EX, adding some extra emphasis on a particular band of the low-end by sending the piano through the spectral "editor" Fumana, linked below. Here's more of the "recipe" if you're curious. I could almost literally KILL YOU with details. I saved you lucky so-and-sos some Googling, looky how nice I am. :)

Control
Stochastic Inspiration Generator+Expander (sequencer)
Sinfonion (quantizer)
Pithoprakta (additional gates and triggers)

Voices
2x Super Disting EX (multisample piano and Wurlitzer)
Plonk (percussion)
Poly Cinematic (distorted pads)

Modulation
Acid Rain Maestro
ochd

Effects and processing
Beads
Fumana
Ripples
Starlab

SIG to Sinfonion, pads, Wurlitzer bombs, and percussion. Sinfonion chords to piano voices. Pithoprakta provides additional gates and triggers for piano voices and Sinfonion, and to occasionally advance Sinfonion’s chord progressions. Super Disting #1 → Ripples → Starlab for reverb and also Fumana. Second Super Disting (Wurlitzer bombs) goes straight to the mixer. PolyCinematic → Beads for grainy goodness on the pads.

This was a single “take” where I “played” the 4 parts and recorded everything into Ableton (where I did some additional processing on the percussion and pads). I have a friend working on a real mix...this is my bullshit non-pro Ableton mix.

I wanted to listen to some Branford Marsalis the other day, so I picked one on my Fav soundtracks.

The Russia House

The Russia House
Various Artists
1990

I know I am supposed to hate everything Russian these days - but fuck that.

This sent me on a deep dive for Jerry Goldsmith soundtracks - Thanks Streaming Service.

Listened to most of all of these.

I've been neck deep in tax hell this week, so I've regressed to the mid 1990s:

White Zombie - La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One (1992)

White Zombie - Astro Creep 2000. (1995)

Rob Zombie: Hellbilly Deluxe (1998)

I've noticed that it's become very popular among current metalheads to hate on groove metal.  For the life of me, I don't understand why.  I'm not huge on the genre, but I do love me some vintage WZ and Pantera.  Dimebag Darrell was a better guitarist than ...well, nearly anybody but certainly anyone who played in Zombie.  His riffs were on another planet in their ferocity.  The key difference between the bands is that Rob Zombie is a decent frontman and Phil Anselmo is a cancerous growth.  This translates to me listening to a lot more Zombie than Pantera in my senior years.
