TMoney Posted June 13, 2019 Report Posted June 13, 2019 New live album from Neil of a 1973 show in Alabama. Good stuff. 2
jose Posted June 13, 2019 Report Posted June 13, 2019 Yes, I spoke in general terms. I didn´t mean that they were not able to compose good songs but IMO they have focused so much on technique, skills and speed that in the end they have forgotten the essence of music that is nothing more than transmitting emotions... Do not pay much attention to me guys: It's late, I'm tired and I start rambling ? 1
Dusty Chalk Posted June 13, 2019 Report Posted June 13, 2019 There’s a certain amount of truth to it, but I think what everyone needs to keep in mind is context. To someone who doesn’t listen to jazz, all jazz sounds the same. To someone who doesn’t listen to classical, all classical sounds the same. To someone who doesn’t listen to a lot of technically proficient musicians with a lot of ego who like to show off, all guitar wankery sounds the same. And it’s not black and white neither. I definitely listen to a lot of guitar wankery, and there’s definitely some I like more and some I like less. I think Malmsteem is a horrible offender (hear his recent cover of George Harrison), and I think Satch and Al Di Meola are often grouped unfairly with the others, when both of them are wonderfully musical. 2
Grahame Posted June 13, 2019 Report Posted June 13, 2019 (edited) https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Affirming_the_consequent Let P = Guitar Wankery ( https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=wankery , #2) Let Q = Shredding (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shred_guitar ) All Guitar Wankery is Shredding Not All Shredding is Guitar Wankery Speed / Virtuosity can be an additional articulation to emote. e.g. Does the "Off Piste" Shredding ( say 2:40-3:25, you'll know it when you hear it) help or hinder in the following (from many, many youtube bedroom guitarists) cover(s) of Vinnie Moore's J.S.Bach / April Sky? Dusty Chalk Posted June 14, 2019 Report Posted June 14, 2019 Fucking outstanding hard rock. Lead singer sounds like a female Geddy Lee/Brian Molko, in a good way. 3 hours ago, Grahame said: https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Affirming_the_consequent Let P = Guitar Wankery ( https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=wankery , #2) Let Q = Shredding (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shred_guitar ) ... 1 2
robm321 Posted June 14, 2019 Report Posted June 14, 2019 ^The math adds up. The point the riffing stops serving the music, it becomes wankery. Don't wank.
jose Posted June 14, 2019 Report Posted June 14, 2019 "Surfing with the Alien" is a nice album but I prefer "The Extremist" 2
Dusty Chalk Posted June 15, 2019 Report Posted June 15, 2019 Baroness, Gold & Grey fucking outstanding! Edit: no, that was just the first song, I fucking hate this Mostly the vocalist

TMoney Posted June 17, 2019 Report Posted June 17, 2019 If he had trimmed a few of the lesser tracks and tightened this up I think it'd be right up there with his very best. His songwriting was rarely better. 3
jose Posted June 19, 2019 Report Posted June 19, 2019 Napalm Death "Utopia Banished" I usually listen only when I´m training. I recognize that they are not my type. 1
TMoney Posted June 21, 2019 Report Posted June 21, 2019 Throwing this on. I always thought the Raconteurs were one of the two groupings that made Jack White palatable (the other being with Meg). Should be interesting

Dusty Chalk Posted June 25, 2019 Report Posted June 25, 2019 Ulysses, On Safari yet another SMOD find, but this is hippie dippy psychedelic instead. Listen to this song from their previous album: https://ulyssesgb.bandcamp.com/track/song-that-has-to-be-sung (...and then listen to the entirety of On Safari ) Previous was also retro psych rock, too, with a serious Jeff Lynne fetish, and I dig. https://aurablaze.bandcamp.com/ 1
