More Samara Joy, just in case you don't remember she's an incredible singer

There are people who think that Emmet's Place concerts are the most relevant jazz events happening nowadays. If you check all the artists to visit his apartment, I kind of concur.

You've Got To Learn (Live)

You've Got To Learn (Live)
Nina Simone
2023

https://album.link/i/1689102364

Example:

Much more of a historical release than an audio one. Some great performances of 1966, at the Newport Jazz Festival. Just not engineered very well, lots of vocal clipping that is tough if you are really trying to listen and get into it. Still really glad it was released, it will just not be in rotation.

Rant - I find that so much with the deluxe and super deluxe ultimate extended anniversary release of some albums with 74 tracks for an album that had 9 songs. Cool, I was glad I heard it once, now I am going to go back to the original album. I usually don't need to listen to the 4th take of a demo that didn't make it on the album in the first place. I feel that I have written about this before. - End Rant.

So, speaking of a band that I know much more by name than music, or I should say I did until now.

Nightlife

Nightlife
Thin Lizzy
1974

https://album.link/i/1443836724

Example:

Really great dual guitar led rock. I, of course, am very familiar with 'the boys are back in town' off of Jailbreak, but there is a lot of music before and after that that I was never exposed to. I guess I will keep my TIDAL account for a little bit longer.

I'm in complete agreement to your rant. Usually there are reasons why the labels didn't include those tracks in the original release. This is getting so absurd that I don't care for new "ultradeluxeanniversarynewfoundgems" anymore. Just an excuse to cash from the devotees.

Country Airs: The Original Version (Expanded Edition)

Country Airs: The Original Version (Expanded Edition)
Rick Wakeman
1986

https://album.link/i/1508393470

Example:

I remember back in the 80s I was into Rick Wakeman (still am) and into New Age Music (kinda still am), and this album came out. It really showed his composition style and is ornamentation of cords and themes. Still really enjoyable as a Sunday morning listen. He has over 90 solo albums, so I don't think I will be doing a Discography run anytime soon.

It's a 5 disc compilation that "only" lasts 1h 24min. It includes many tracks that aren't very popular, I wouldn't say they're bebop standards, but showcases extremely well the evolution from swing into bop, and features many jazz stars like Fats Navarro, JJ Johnson, Stan Getz, Milt Jackson and Dexter Gordon among many others. Very fun. It's available on Qobuz

Americana, Vol. 2

Americana, Vol. 2
JD Allen
2022

https://album.link/i/1633349120

Example:

I feel bad that I didn't start with Volume 1 of Americana. Anyway a very good Jazz/Blues Album with lots of flavors and styles on display. This made it into my queue last year, and as we know I am way behind. But happy to discover gems like this in the mix. Need to explore JD a little more, I like the style and this one is recorded well.

^^^ Must sound great, too....TBM plus the XRCD!  Still regret to this day when I went to Japan in the 90's, I went to a high end shop in Akihabara.....they had a whole display of TBM CD's, and I didn't buy one..... IIRC prices were pretty good too!

I bought quite a few titles both Mofi, XRCD and HDCD (before Microsoft screwed up the format) about 14 or 15 years ago before prices went up due to "fiber audiophile".

Now that I think about it and see the prices of some of these discontinued CDs, I think that I should have bought some more due to their quality and the love with which they are published.

Edit: two of my favourites XRCD:

1812 Overture Tchaikovsky xrcd 24 and The Planets Host (by way I have about 8 version of the Planets if someone has interest I can do a comparative).

Plays For Bird (RVG Remaster)

Plays For Bird (RVG Remaster)
Sonny Rollins
1956

https://album.link/i/1443215456   < This list needs to be updated

Example:

I was not a big fan of the first tune, but the rest of the album made up for it spades. I don't really know why, may be the first track was a little bit too much in your face. 4 tracks for 52 min.. Some killer tunes before the magic 1959.

Street Survivors

Street Survivors
Lynyrd Skynyrd
1977

https://album.link/i/1484692844

Example:

Remembering Ronnie on the anniversary of the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash on this day in 1977. The album that was released three days before the crash that took 6 people's lives.

I saw them once they regrouped with brother Johnny singing in 1988, along with the Rossington Collins Band at the Concord Pavilion. It was a good show, but of course not the same.

Edit: Correction - SEP 27, 1987 - at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre... {Friend Richard, who has a much better memory than myself provided clues to find the actual show).

Oh and here is the setlist -  https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/lynyrd-skynyrd/1987/irvine-meadows-amphitheatre-irvine-ca-1bc6ddc8.html

A great half hour of chill beats way before chill beats was a thing.

Looks like the surviving episodes of Jazz Casual have been uploaded. Also an out-of-print DVD box set. "If Ken Burns' 10-disc 'Jazz' is a freshman lecture, this is a senior recital."

EDIT: Some on streaming services and a good short read: https://jazzhistoryonline.com/ralph-j-gleason/
