Wmcmanus Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 (edited) Just saying... it can get kind of annoying in here, not to mention boring, if we want to make it about politics. Edited January 18, 2012 by Wmcmanus
Knuckledragger Posted January 18, 2012 Author Report Posted January 18, 2012 Today is January 18th. Wikipedia, Reddit, and many other sites are going dark in protest of SOPA and PIPA. https://www.google.c...ing/takeaction/ If SOPA or PIPA pass, there won't be any more Slow Forum.
grawk Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 Unless all of a sudden people start using the slow forum to distribute pirated movies, SOPA won't kill the slow forum. It may make you want to post less, or harder for you to find images.
Knuckledragger Posted January 18, 2012 Author Report Posted January 18, 2012 SOPA and/or PIPA would take out imgur (where I host 99% of the images I post) and minus (the other 1%), and severely cripple YouTube and Vimeo. This is to say nothing of the source sites (reddit, the LJ randompictures feed, etc.) That'd leave ...funny text stories from usenet? On a semi-related note, a Polish friend of mine informs me that "pipa" is a slang term for vagina.
grawk Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 You're using the word "would" when "might" is more appropriate
Tyll Hertsens Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 Regardless, I called my senators and congressman to register my distaste.
catscratch Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 If SOPA and PIPA pass we'll have a lot more problems than not having the Slow Forum. And yes, I don't see anything wrong in taking an overly alarmist tone over this. These regulations need to die and whoever endorsed them needs to be voted out of office. Civic rights are not a right, they're a constant struggle, and this one is ours. My only issue with these blackouts is that the people that they're likely to reach are already against these regulations, so all they can really do is make them a bit more vocal. Now if google blacks out all of its services... now we're talking.
Knuckledragger Posted January 18, 2012 Author Report Posted January 18, 2012 The best idea I saw WRT reaching an audience that doesn't already know about SOPA and PIPA was in a reddit comment a few days ago: the legion of porn tube sites should all go dark in a similar fashion to reddit and wikipedia. Take away people's porn and they take notice.
