Voltron Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Using Jim's recipe for this drink, which I have never heard of. The Alamagoozlum Cocktail 1/4 egg white 1 oz genever (Bols) 1 oz water (filter) 3/4 oz Jamaican rum (Appleton's V/X) 3/4 oz yellow Chartreuse or green Chartreuse (Yellow) 3/4 oz gomme syrup (Small Hands) 1/4 oz CuraƧao (Curacao of Curacao) 1/4 oz Angostura bitters Shake hard and long (no comments) with ice in a cocktail shaker. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
shellylh Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Nice Al.. but you must be drinking a lot, your drink is out of focus!
Voltron Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 First drink, Shelly, but the Bols bottle is so attractive that I always pick the pic focused on it.
Dusty Chalk Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 I actually thought it was kind of arty. Like an ad I'd see in a magazine. But I probably wouldn't have given it as careful a look if you hadn't said anything Shelly, so thanks for that. Me: Schlafly Irish-style Extra Stout -- pretty good, don't know if I'll go back for more. Also: Schlafly 2010 Reserve Imperial Stout -- I think this is as good as the 2008, will have to compare.
Dusty Chalk Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Schlafly 2008 Reserve Imp stout -- yup.
grawk Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 I got the schlaffly irish and coffee stouts, they didn't have the reserve (tho my beer guy wasn't there, just his brother).
grawk Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Great Divide Yeti - Espresso Oak Aged Imperial Stout
grawk Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 schafly irish extra stout, also VERY good
morphsci Posted January 27, 2011 Author Report Posted January 27, 2011 (edited) Almagoozlum comparison using Boomsma Oude (left) and Anchor Genevieve (right) same recipe as previous but reduced the gum syrup from 3/4 to 1/4 oz. As far as I can tell no difference between the two. Makes sense given some of the other highly flavored booze in there. Still a bit sweet but definitely not a pansy drink based upon alcohol content. I want to order one of these in bar, perhaps soon. What did you think of it Al? Edited January 27, 2011 by morphsci

I didn't know they had a coffee stout, but I would have avoided it anyway. The 2009 was a BarelyWine, I've had it, it's good, but I've had better.
Fitz Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 I didn't know they had a coffee stout, but I would have avoided it anyway. Someday you'll learn to appreciate coffee and coffee flavor in beer.

Voltron Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 As a baseball fan, I wish the Cooperstown cocktail were more interesting but it is tasty as I built a couple of them tonight 1.75 oz gin (North Shore No 6) .50 oz French vermouth (Dolin blanc) .50 oz Italian vermouth (Carpano) Sprig of mint Stir liquid ingredients with ice and strain into cocktail glass then add mint. A perfect martini with mint. Oh well, still nice.
shellylh Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 A sip of Cerbois Armagnac VSOP before bed.
grawk Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 I finished the night with a head-case flask of saz 18 (poured into the head-case glen cairn in 3 pours). I should have posted in the is anyone else drunk thread after that. now it's 2 bottles of water.
Dusty Chalk Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Someday you'll learn to appreciate coffee and coffee flavor in beer. Actually, I don't mind a little bit of coffee flavor in my beer, but I'm actually getting worse with coffee -- I used to enjoy the smell of it, now even that's making me squeamish. I got a whiff of stinkbug, and my housemate's coffee grinds in the trash, and I actually prefered the stinkbug smell. Maybe prefered isn't the right word.
shellylh Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Yep. The Cerbois VSOP is much better than the Metaxa 7 star imo but is slightly more expensive too.
shellylh Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Heh, normal person slightly. ~$40 vs ~$25. I guess that would be more than slightly though.
