Since Marc did not like the Aperol Sour I went with the following.

The Paperol Original recipe by Goncalo de Sousa Monteiro

   1 1/2 oz Aperol

   1/2 oz dry gin

   2 bar spoons Cointreau

   1/2 oz lime juice

Shake with ice and strain into chilled cocktail glass.

Garnish with an Orange Twist.

The idea was putting some more depth into a fine starter, the Aperol Sour. The first step was using Cointreau instead of sugar, yielding an “Aperol-Car.” A splash of dry gin added further depth. Some years later I discovered the exact same ingredients in different ratios on the bar menu of Negroni in Munich: a drink by Mauro Mahjoub, named “Modigliani” and dated 1995.

Nice looking drink Jim.

I am still working my way through Anvil.

Singapore Sling

I used the recipe from "Vintage"

2 oz Bluecoat gin

3/4 oz Cherry Heering

2 tsp Benedictine

2 tsp Cointreau

2 oz pineapple juice

3/4 oz lime juice

2 dashes of grenadine

1 dash Angostura bitters

Splash of soda water on top

The drink is pretty good but nowhere near as good as a fruity drink like the Zombie.

2005 Pedras, Ristow Estate Cabernet. Now that the formalities have ended I am off to daddy's thoughtful spot in the yard to drink this cab, watch the sunset and look for snakes 'cause rattlesnake season has begun.

I just googled the price of the Pedras, for 35-$40 dollars this is a really good Cab. After an hour or so it has really opened up, the charcoal and leather has given way to a nice fruit layer and the edgyness has smoothed out. You should check this out and at $35 a pretty good deal!

Had some Amalaya Malbec with dinner (Rum and Coke short ribs). I liked the Malbec but preferred my husband's Cabernet Sauvignon (Barnard Griffin) which was excellent - I am going to buy a few bottles next time I am out.

Greg, I'll keep an eye out for the Pedras.

Jim, this one is much better than the Aperol Sour, good call. The Cointreau is the key. Still, it's probably not worth the effort over the Aperol and Soda, assuming you like the Aperol taste.

Any other good Cassis drinks that don't involve Champaign?
