My relatively local liquor store in Champaign was talking it up when I was in there last as their distributor just started carrying it.

First up: This is a very good Cuba Libre recipe if you want a lighter true cocktail, but if nothing else I like to add bitters to the usual recipe: CUBA LIBRE Adapted by Isidro Gutiérrez for Town at the Chambers Hotel 3 ounces Coca-Cola 1 ounce rum 1/2 ounce gins 2 dashes bitters 1/4 lime Dash of club soda Mix the Coca-Cola, rum and gin in a highball glass. Add the bitters, and squeeze in the juice from the lime. Top off with the club soda to add bubbles. Yield: 1 serving. Pretty damn good. The Mexican coke is not as cloyingly sweet and the gin adds a nice bit of complexity. Decided to use both orange and aromatic bitters and key lime juice. Edited March 10, 2011 by morphsci

Next up: (Not Quite An) Oriental Cocktail 1.5 oz rye (Redbreast 12) .75 oz curacao (Creole Shrubb) .75 sweet vermouth (Carpano Antica) .5 oz lime juice Shake and strain. Garnish with a cherry. Fantastic modification! The Redbreast really works here. Has anyone tried it in a cocktail? Hmm ... It has been a while since I mixed up the oriental but this tastes really good. Free if anyone will pay shipping, otherwise it will meet Jim's Page's Parfait Amour in liqueur hell. Here's what I tried the THIRD time. 2.5 oz BS rum 0.5 oz Falernum Half a lime, quartered and squeezed. Stir. So, I tried to vindicate my DIY falernum. So, tried: Rum Swizzle 1.5 oz rum 0.75 oz lime juice 0.5 oz falernum 1 dash angostura bitters Better! More lime and better rum next time... And real swizzle sticks! morphsci Posted March 10, 2011 Author Report Posted March 10, 2011 (edited) Anvil # 28 Dulchin using the Esquire recipe (which can be found under the recipe for the Hoptoad. 2 ounces pisco 1 ounce dry (Hungarian) apricot brandy (cheated here and used Apricot liquer) 2 teaspoons Grand Marnier 1 ounce lime juice 1 teaspoon grenadine Shake well with cracked ice, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. And DONE! Redid this one using Apricot eau-de-vie in place of the apricot liqueur. Much better as the flavors come through better with less sweetness. Forgot to get the grenadine in the picture. Marc, the corn-n-oil is better with a better rum. I have used both Goslings black seal and the Ron Zacapa 23 with good results. Edited March 10, 2011 by morphsci

Voltron Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 (edited) The Final Ward 1 oz rye whiskey 1 oz Luxardo maraschino liqueur 1 oz fresh lemon juice 1 oz Chartreuse Put all ingredients into an ice-filled shaker and shake hard until well chilled. Strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist. A bit sweet but the maraschino is not over the top. I wish I could figure out what was in that Carthusian. One of these with yellow Chartreuse, but 1.5 oz on all but the maraschino, which I kept at 1 oz. I really like that. Nice. And I liked the Corn-N-Oil quite a bit with Goslings. Starting with a Blood and Sand tonight. 1 oz Asyla Scotch (including unicorn dust) 1 oz Orange Juice 3/4 oz Carpano Antica 3/4 oz Cherry Heering Shake the bloody beejebus out orbit and strain into a glass. Add a couple of cherries and enjoy. Actually drinking the second one as the first must have evaporated. Made another of these, substituting a Moro blood orange for the standard fare.
