elnero Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 I wasn't really sure where to post this, a friend at work has a set of K701's whose cable has apparently crapped out, can anyone offer any advice on who he might contact to see about getting them recabled at a reasonable price?
MASantos Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 I'm on the other side of the pond, otherwise I would offer assistance!
elnero Posted December 2, 2010 Author Report Posted December 2, 2010 Yeah, probably the closer to Canada the better but thanks.
luvdunhill Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 AKG? Surely they'd fix their own headphones.
swt61 Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 No they don't. That's how I found Head-Fi, because AKG wouldn't fix the short in my K340.
fishski13 Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 I wasn't really sure where to post this, a friend at work has a set of K701's whose cable has apparently crapped out, can anyone offer any advice on who he might contact to see about getting them recabled at a reasonable price? is the short at the cups or at the TRS plug? if it's just the TRS plug, many here could walk you through the soldering process. just be careful where you bend over...
luvdunhill Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 No they don't. That's how I found Head-Fi, because AKG wouldn't fix the short in my K340. Ha! So those cable vendors are necessary evils in this hobby, huh?
fishski13 Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 Ha! So those cable vendors are necessary evils in this hobby, huh? i would hope AKG would service in production HPs like the K70x. oh well, if not, i hear ALO is the most mostest.
Sherwood Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 No they don't. That's how I found Head-Fi, because AKG wouldn't fix the short in my K340. This stroke of luck provided courtesy of AKG Acoustics GmbH.
Sherwood Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 I'm sure you're not looking for anything fancy, but I once owned a pair of Moon-Audio recabled AKG K701s and loved them. Cable looked and felt great, and I liked the sound of the phones themselves. Plus Drew is good people. It's a thought.
MASantos Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 i would hope AKG would service in production HPs like the K70x. oh well, if not, i hear ALO is the most mostest. ALO is the worse worst!! The guy is full of crap and is products are outright theft for what you get!
elnero Posted December 3, 2010 Author Report Posted December 3, 2010 Not sure where the problem in the cable is, he's tried to track it down but hasn't had much luck. A reasonably cheap, not fancy solution it what he's looking for, otherwise I think he'd just spend the money on a new pair.
spritzer Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 I'm sure AKG will service a current production model.
mrarroyo Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 Steve, that is funny and sad. I had my AKG K340 checked at the AKG facility in Nashville a few years back, now they have moved the facility to another state.
livewire Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 That's why I bought the K702. When my kids use them and step on the cable thus destroying it, I just jump on ebay and buy another plug & play stocker for $18 and am good to go again. Not trying to rub salt in your wounds, but if you do consider buying another, get the K702. For this very reason, I wont let the kiddies near my Staxen.
Knuckledragger Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 ALO is the worse worst!! The guy is full of crap and is products are outright theft for what you get! I hear SuckItALO products are significantly better. Even if they're made in the sweatshops of Communist Seacoastistan.
Dusty Chalk Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 I thought SuckItALO's license was temporarily suspended pending review?
MASantos Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 I thought SuckItALO's license was temporarily suspended pending review? Huh?
Dusty Chalk Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 In other words, I don't think SuckItALO is doing much business right now. You know, for overworking the help.
Sherwood Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 overworking the help. Once Lily started doing all the soldering, things really went downhill. She was better in QA and marketing.
n_maher Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 She's a brutal taskmaster. That said, recabling the 701s is a bit of PITA. Removing the metal screen without damaging the headphones can be tricky but if you can manage that the rest is easy. You do need to trace colored wires to the plug since AKG is fond of not using a standard. If I was asked to make a recommendation I'd get something like cardas or mogami mini quad cable, strip the rubber cover, the copper braided shield and resheath it in nylon multifilament and terminate as desired. And Dusty's right, I'm pretty much retired at this point and not building anything.
Fitz Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 Removing the metal screen without damaging the headphones can be tricky but if you can manage that the rest is easy. And apparently even AKG has difficulty doing that, judging by pictures I've seen on Head-Fi. Except for the odd stubborn pair, it's really not that hard to do with some appropriately shaped tweezers.
swt61 Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 ...it's really not that hard to do with some appropriately shaped tweezers. Isn't that the solution for so many things.
John E Woven Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 Found a guide of some guy who recabled a k701, complete with lots of pictures. Worth a look, if nothing else: click
