Grahame
Android App - Streaming Quality = Extreme (=320K) Triode's Spotify App ( for slimserver) , (setttings) Stream Quality = 320K So you could listen to a 320K non P2P stream on a sofware player on your desktop ( or just use a smartphone over WiFi)
shellylh
I am confused, I thought the Triode software was for Logitech players. Are there any 3rd party Spotify streaming apps for Mac (that would not be PTP and would stream at 320)? I want to stream from my office/home computer which is where I do most of my listening. I am fine with 160 on my phone. Perhaps I should try out google play. Is all there steaming at 320? Edited May 21, 2014 by shellylh
Grahame
Triode's plugin is for squeezeserver. It works with software players as well as logitech hardware players .... one software player is squeezeplay http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezePlay https://code.google.com/p/squeezeslave/downloads/list?q=label:SqueezePlay So you could run it https://code.google.com/p/squeezeslave/downloads/detail?name=SqueezePlay-7.8.0r328.dmg&can=2&q=label%3ASqueezePlay on your mac desktop to listen to the spotify stream ( without P2P) EDIT: or in my case Edited May 22, 2014 by Grahame

Dusty Chalk
I don't want to use the Spotify desktop app because it uses PTP instead of streaming from the server- so I was trying out the web player. I have a premium membership for now. A minor quibble -- it uses some P2P. I'm not sure for what. I am pretty sure it's not using it for the actual streaming, as if I load some personal music (a specific Gojira album, Porcupine Tree, Steve Wilson, etc. -- other artists that don't approve their music for Spotify), it doesn't show up on another computer. I'll look into it. Unless it becomes rendered moot first (due to them removing all P2P functionality).
shellylh
It does seem to be using it for the actual streaming.http://pansentient.com/2011/04/spotify-technology-some-stats-and-how-spotify-works/http://www.csc.kth.se/~gkreitz/spotify-p2p10/
Dusty Chalk
Hrm...will still look into it (e.g. with actual testing of ports).
postjack
Google Play's web client (there is no desktop app) is excellent. Not sure what the streaming quality is.
CarlSeibert
This is soo 'toopid it requires immediate posting (from tomorrow's LA Times) In an interview here at Apple’s headquarters, Timothy D. Cook, Apple’s chief executive, repeatedly emphasized the talent that Dr. Dre and Mr. Iovine would bring to Apple. He also praised the Beats music service, which creates playlists for subscribers. “These guys are really unique,” Mr. Cook said. “It’s like finding the precise grain of sand on the beach. They’re rare and very hard to find.” Wow. Edited May 29, 2014 by CarlSeibert

blessingx
But maybe they're on their way, aka baby steps, aka "more balanced" http://www.engadget.com/2014/05/29/beats-solo-2-headphones/
blessingx
Anyone else giving Beats a try since the switch/MOG death? Heavy on the social stuff so conventional search and album-artist views suffers a little, but overall still decent and I suspect the recommended playlists will get used more over time. shellylh
I started but it kept asking all these questions, I got annoyed and quit.
blessingx
Not sure what all has changed since being acquired (for instance phone number is now optional and trial extended to 14 days, both of which are new), but I believe I was only asked to choose favorite genres and at least two artists before everything fell into place. shellylh
That sounds about right but I think gave up in the middle of choosing my favorite genres (not knowing how many things they were going to ask).
shellylh
Has anyone noticed the Spotify app on ios (specifically ipad) draining the battery and heating up the ipad a lot? I miss mog so much!
CarlSeibert
I've been happy enough with the phone app. It's better than MOG's was, I think. I do miss MOG's radio feature, though. On the web app you have no access to your favorites, which makes it useless to me. Apple will probably just shut it down anyway, so it's all academic. Like Shelly said: I miss MOG. blessingx
If anyone is considering a Beats subscription, good way to get it for $75 for the year.http://9to5mac.com/2014/06/13/discounted-beats-music-gift-cards-yield-25-off-subscription-fees-1-year-for-75-or-less/ EDIT: After buying the above I had to fight with Beats to get it applied to an annual subscription. They gave in, but I wouldn't recommend. Edited June 20, 2014 by blessingx

CarlSeibert
Beats has implemented the library in their web client. Still no playlists in the web client, but I never used them for anything but keeping notes of what to check out later. There's Google Keep for that now. So, at this point, I'm declaring Beats to be usable - for me, anyway.
blessingx
Playlists are there too. Under username/made by me.Damn, Swell was bought by Apple and shutting down next week. Over the last few months I've probably used it as much as MOG/Beats. Hope it resurfaces in some form quickly.http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/jul/28/apple-swell-radio-podcast-app Edited July 28, 2014 by blessingx
CarlSeibert
You can play a playlist in the web client, you just can't make one.
