Grahame Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 And spotify recently removed time limits from their free offering - still ads though http://mashable.com/2013/12/11/spotify-free-faq/ https://www.spotify.com/us/free/ Begun the streaming wars has! http://www.forbes.com/sites/bobbyowsinski/2014/01/21/beats-punches-spotify-counters-let-the-streaming-wars-begin/
blessingx Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) Will MOG allow you to export all that "value" you added to their system for you .... A lesson for relying on any "closed" service. what's your music listening continuity plan for when they wink out of existence?Though to be fair there is no real open service to rely on for the other 95+% of MOGs value either. Anyone know if there's anything similar to the below for moving between services?http://resp.in/ Edited January 21, 2014 by blessingx
shellylh Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) According to this, 320 kbps streaming is only for premium customers. https://support.spotify.com/us/learn-more/faq/#!/article/What-bitrate-does-Spotify-use-for-streaming You also have to be a premium member to use it with SB Touch. https://support.spotify.com/us/learn-more/faq/#!/article/Logitech Edited January 21, 2014 by shellylh
CarlSeibert Posted January 22, 2014 Author Report Posted January 22, 2014 At least Beats claims they'll still stream at 320 Kbps. But the cringe factor touching an app that says "Beats" Ouch. And then there's the Squeeze box issue. Does anybody know if Spotify is actually delivering the claimed stream rate? They weren't early on.
Dusty Chalk Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 I haven't bothered to double-check.
blessingx Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 (edited) Shelly, it doesn't help your SB need, but just saw Rdio has a 50% off price for those with an .edu address. Gets you back to $4.99 for streaming across most platforms, including mobile. That said the bitrates are unknown. Edited January 22, 2014 by blessingx
CarlSeibert Posted January 23, 2014 Author Report Posted January 23, 2014 If anybody wants a giggle, go read the Beats Music app reviews on the Play Store. Health care.gov meets the final days of Singlepower. Oops.
blessingx Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 Ugh, the first Beats reviews on each... App Store: "MOG users will be disappointed."Play Store: "If you love MOG you will hate this."

blessingx Posted January 24, 2014 Report Posted January 24, 2014 For what it's worth.... Hey MOG Listeners, We owe you an update. We wanted to give you more details and clarification about what you can expect over the next few months. If you’d like to try Beats Music, please sign up for a free trial and check it out. You don’t have to wait until we send you the free month code – you can add that credit to an existing Beats Music account in March. We wanted to allow as many of you as possible to take advantage of the AT&T offer first. We’re also building a playlist transfer tool so you can bring your playlists over from MOG to Beats Music. Favorites will not transfer because Beats Music’s feature “My Library” works a bit differently. We wanted to take a moment to highlight how Beats Music has incorporated some of the best features of MOG. The 320kbps high quality audio streams across platforms, competitive 20+ million track catalog available to search-and-play on-demand, and killer personalized recommendations are still essential to the new music experience we’ve built. New releases are also available on Beats Music, but now we divide them up so you can browse by genre — we got this feedback from you back in the MOG days, so we hope you like this change. You can browse them by genre from the “Find It” section. “The Sentence” is a powerful way to create a practically never-ending radio station based on your chosen mood and the genre you’d like to hear. We think it’s a big improvement on artist radio. Also, artist radio fans please check out the “Intro to…” and “Deep Cuts” playlists for artists instead. We’ve found them to be just like human-curated artist stations. More to come! Lastly — we really want to highlight our expert curation. Please check out our playlists. They’re really, really good. “Find It” and “Just For You” are two great places to start. Like we said before, MOG will shut down on 4/15/14. Thank you for being a part of it, and thank you for reaching out to us with your feedback over the last few weeks. Seriously. We are humbled by how much you care and we hope this makes the transition easier. Ian
CarlSeibert Posted January 29, 2014 Author Report Posted January 29, 2014 Notice the here to fore unspoken reference to a free month of the new service. Nice of them to mention that. Assuming they can actually make the app work, of course.
blessingx Posted January 31, 2014 Report Posted January 31, 2014 So it's obviously more Pandora-like than MOG, but been using iTunes Radio a bunch since its launched and it's a lot of fun. Some have done bitrate analysis. Considering the $25 Match to remove commercials (and backup). This post probably doesn't mean much, but I can say creating the following stations produces some nice music. Ike Quebec & Lester Young Art Tatum, Dave Brubeck & Bill Evans Johnny Hartman & Nat King Cole Giving Songza a try next.
blessingx Posted January 31, 2014 Report Posted January 31, 2014 Moss reviews MOG. Berg reviews Beats. http://recode.net/2014/01/21/beats-music-streams-with-a-human-touch/ video: http://videos.videopress.com/wqRfYZjB/recode_waltreview_beatsmusic_hd.mp4 Worth a glance just to see the UI.
blessingx Posted March 31, 2014 Report Posted March 31, 2014 How to transfer your MOG playlists to Beats
CarlSeibert Posted April 1, 2014 Author Report Posted April 1, 2014 Today I got an email that said they were going to slip the shut down date for MOG. Didn't say by how long. Very odd/interesting.
CarlSeibert Posted April 2, 2014 Author Report Posted April 2, 2014 Apple Buys Beats The streaming music service, not the headphones. I just noticed that in the first post in this thread I mourn the demise of Lala at Apple's hands. Now this weirdness. Lefsetz has the story, with his usual mix of brilliance and bullshit on display: http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/
CarlSeibert Posted April 2, 2014 Author Report Posted April 2, 2014 Could well be. Google comes up with stories about Apple wanting a streaming on demand service, but nothing about any deal. The bullshit portion of that Lefsetz post is a little thicker than normal.
grawk Posted April 2, 2014 Report Posted April 2, 2014 It got me yesterday too. I woke up, read the email, and it was plausible enough. Then I searched around a little later, and realized what day it was.
CarlSeibert Posted April 4, 2014 Author Report Posted April 4, 2014 It doesn't look like he got any traction on the internet with it. That must be ego-crushing. But it's lucky for him, really. If he had moved a stock price I can assure from experience that the consequences could be really, really bad. Forget the SEC flapping its gums. We're talking being perma-banned by the Google bots! That'd suck, ego-wise. (It almost happened to our entire company over something that was a complete accident on our part. That would have been considerably worse than a blow to the ego.) I did find one hip-hop blogger who, a couple months ago, cited an unnamed source who claimed that there were negotiations.
blessingx Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 (edited) Rdio is moving to 320 AAC - http://www.engadget.com/2014/04/29/rdio-improved-audio-quality/?ncid=rss_truncatedInsane video - http://www.cnbc.com/id/101614359 - but you may be already seeing the Pono-effect in play. CarlSeibert Posted May 1, 2014 Author Report Posted May 1, 2014 I don't know if they've set a new date. It WAS supposed to be April 15.
