The Monkey Posted November 27, 2010 Author Report Posted November 27, 2010 What version of the Apple TV software are you running? According to this, you should be able to see video playlists as of v2.3. See also, post #4 here.
The Monkey Posted November 28, 2010 Author Report Posted November 28, 2010 It took me about 30 seconds to accomplish this on my Apple TV. Just make a playlist of the movies you want. It appears that the Media Kind needs to be Music Video, which is stupid, but maybe there's a workaround. I suggest this new site, Google, as it has lots of information from teh internets. You can get recipes, too!
MexicanDragon Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 Just get a new Mini and put your 200 albums and 200 movies on it and hook it up with a single cable. Bam, done. Move the 1G ATV to a bedroom and you have movies + a solid computer/TV combo for a few years. Sure, it's throwing $500 at a problem, but isn't throwing $500 at a problem what most Apple aficionados are all about? **BRENT**

The Monkey Posted November 28, 2010 Author Report Posted November 28, 2010 Falling in love with AirPlay (with various interweb stations). While people are testing, mind if I ask current model AppleTV owners if audio AirPlay streaming with iPhone or iPad keeps an interface going on the iDevice (normal iTunes, etc.) not blank out (with simple controls) as video streaming appears to do in Apples AirPlay vids? Trying to decide between an AppleTV or another AirPort Expess and for this use may not have a TV turned on when playing music. Ric, I'll check this out tomorrow and get you an answer. AirPlay is great for my son. It's much easier for him to navigate than firing up the Apple TV and wading through the menus.
The Monkey Posted November 28, 2010 Author Report Posted November 28, 2010 Ric, my iPad keeps the full interface when streaming music files through the Apple TV. The Apple TV, however, does not display the song that is currently streaming. Perhaps I need to fiddle around with the settings.
blessingx Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 (edited) Thanks Dinny for the test. Yeah, this direction is partially about making playback simple for the GF, so similar use case. Lovin' AirPlay myself though. Edited November 28, 2010 by blessingx
The Monkey Posted November 28, 2010 Author Report Posted November 28, 2010 It will be interesting to see what types of higher end components embrace Airplay (i.e. Non-boomboxes). It's so easy to use. Typical Apple; take something that has been around for a while and take it to the next level by making it simple and seamless. Love it. Tapatalk.
shellylh Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 Finally got around to upgrading the ipad and Apple TV and airplay is great. There is only one complaint I have but maybe someone here knows how to fix it. I can choose a youtube video to play on my ipad (via the you Tube app) and then tell it to play it on the Apple TV. However, when I "close" or maybe I should say suspend the You Tube app, the video stops playing on the Apple TV. Anyone know how to fix this without having to search and play directly from the Apple TV? Not sure if someone already asked this as I haven't been following all the airplay stuff as much as would usually due to my schedule last week.

Tapatalk. for $70 you can make anything with an optical in airplay compliant
grawk Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 yup Or for $99, anything with hdmi, too...
Jabreal53hcase Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 I think mine is working pretty well, but it seems like there is nothing much to compliment about although it is new, but I don’t get the idea why am I not excited about it. I guess there need to add more stuff into it so that people like me would be more passionate about their products. Everything’s good, the channel, video categories, etc. I enjoy watching it, but I guess I am expecting a little too much.
blessingx Posted July 31, 2012 Report Posted July 31, 2012 AppleTV just got Hulu Plus, which means on top of the TV shows, nearly all currently licensed Criterion films are available to stream (Criterion jumped over from Netflix streaming last year). Hulu Plus kept me on Roku, but will probably switch now.

Absorbine_Sr Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 Yep. I had been close to canceling my Hulu+ account due to disuse, but now that it's on ATV I think I'll let it run a bit longer.
blessingx Posted September 20, 2013 Report Posted September 20, 2013 (edited) For those with Apple TVs, I'm considering one for a gift and was wondering for those times using it only for audio - any issues running with TV off/unplugged? Appears not from web, but soliciting HC specialists. Person has iPhone/iPad to control. Edited September 20, 2013 by blessingx
shellylh Posted September 20, 2013 Report Posted September 20, 2013 I think I've used the Apple TV for audio with the TV off with no problems but I am not 100%. Â I can check tonight. Â
grawk Posted September 20, 2013 Report Posted September 20, 2013 I've done that very thing many times. But if it's just for audio, why not just use an airport express?
blessingx Posted September 20, 2013 Report Posted September 20, 2013 Thanks both of you. It's not just for audio, but I suspect it will mostly be used as such.
crappyjones123 Posted September 20, 2013 Report Posted September 20, 2013 I use it for audio exclusively via the optical out. Works ok if the files are on the laptop itself. If using a hard drive it cuts out and keeps going to the laptop speakers. Very big pain in the ass.
