It really is very rewarding Thanks! I love machining -- if only they'd let me wear my electrostatic headphones around the milling machine 6 hours ago, JoaMat said: Indeed a most elegant amplifier. Impressive chassis work - like a Maserati. Aw! Thanks! :-)
spritzer Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 Here is something new that I might make more of... the SMD KGSSHV. This is really my attempt to build a "cheap" electrostatic amp to bring a great amp to the masses. Lofty goal and I have no idea if it will succeed but its worth a shot. 11 1
UFN Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 Oooh, interesting! Would you mind showing some pics of the boards? //UFN
spritzer Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 Here are the boards mounted to the heatsinks. One small mod wire as the bloody layout software doesn't check the ground plane for continuity... The board has already been through major revisions to adapt this to mass production and I doubt I am done. 5
johnwmclean Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 Really nice boards Birgir. Are you using an reflow oven? I’m in the process of modifying a 9L toaster oven using a Controleo2 kit for my Dynalo mini boards .
G600 Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 Looks like tip soldering to me. But beautiful job for sure !
Pars Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 Nice job Birgir! What have you got the SK170 pair wrapped in? Also, can the HV silicon be obtained for these today? And are the thru-hole resistors just there cuz you didn't have the SMD on hand? What size package are the resistors? 1210? 0805?
Tinkerer Posted January 8, 2017 Report Posted January 8, 2017 I can't believe how compact that all is. Makes my circlotron case seem even more ridiculous than it already is. 9 hours ago, Pars said: What have you got the SK170 pair wrapped in? I would hazard it's plain old heat shrink used to force the flat parts together to help keep the temperature drift between the two more in line.
spritzer Posted January 8, 2017 Report Posted January 8, 2017 It is indeed all soldered by hand and they are 2510 resistors. Only size you can really use for electrostatic HV use even though I also use them for the LV stuff as well. That is mostly to use the same parts more than once. The through hole resistors are there because I forgot to order 200R and 300R units but I might change them to series connected 100R's anyway. With pick and place it helps to keep the parts numbers low so hello series connection. The 2SK170's are just covered with heatshrink and the HV parts are out of stock but I have thousands of them.
Pars Posted January 9, 2017 Report Posted January 9, 2017 Oops, yeah forgot the HV part and haven't looked at voltage specs for SMD resistors. 2510 doesn't seem to save much real estate over thru-hole. Vey nice job though!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
spritzer Posted January 9, 2017 Report Posted January 9, 2017 They are a bit smaller but I need to series connect to bring down number of values used so space saving is pretty much zero. My goal is to have them assembled for me a thus cut the cost of the amps. 1
Whitigir Posted March 6, 2017 Report Posted March 6, 2017 Hello guys, first time in this thread, learning and working on the carbon. I was pointed to this thread by insanity ! More stuff to read and learn ! Thank you all ! vince
G600 Posted March 6, 2017 Report Posted March 6, 2017 Perfectly true. And as Kevin said, we are all biased, usually into class A...
