Horio Posted November 20, 2011 Report Posted November 20, 2011 (edited) Thanks for all the compliments guys. The biggest thanks goes to Kevin for the great design! Edited November 20, 2011 by Horio
TMoney Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 Looks fantastic with the front panel. Great job, Greg. Can't wait to hear it for myself.
Pars Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 Is the back panel on that case aluminum, or is that the stock steel panel? I'd like to do something similar on my dynahi, but didn't think that FPE did steel panels.
ujamerstand Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 Modushop offers aluminum back panels.
Pars Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 They didn't when I bought my Dissipante, but yes, I was aware that they do offer them now. Hence the question.
Horio Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 There is a bit of a cost premium, but Modushop does offer the Dissipante cases with 10mm thick front and 3mm thick aluminum top/bot/rear panels. Its well worth the little bit of added cost in my book.
Pars Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 Yes, I would agree. Mine has the 10mm front panel, but at the time they were not offering aluminum rear panels. I take it yours is aluminum? Nice job at any rate, and thanks for the reply.
Horio Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 Mine is the all aluminum panel version (3U x 400mm deep). I also prefer the thicker aluminum panels, as they are a little stiffer than the much thinner steel panels.
Pars Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 Thanks. I just looked and the aluminum back panel and a top panel would run 59 euro shipped. Not likely. I wonder how well FPE's anodized panels match up to these?
n_maher Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 The problem with anodized FPE panels is the exposed raw edge unless you elect anodizing after finishing which is a huge add IIRC.
cobra_kai Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 I think FPE will be more even for just the panels. If you have a silver case I think the shiny edges look cool. I can see it being undesirable if you have a black case though.
ujamerstand Posted November 21, 2011 Report Posted November 21, 2011 They do offer to smooth the edge for 3 dollars though, the finish isn't too bad. But yeah, doesn't look good on black.
Pars Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Of course the case is black. All I really need done is painting or silkscreen or something to look like your rear panel. Not in a huge hurry, so I'll keep looking/thinking. Shipping from Modushop for a pair of panels is more than the panels themselves... damn Italian post.
Mister X Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 http://www.frontpanelexpress.com/fpd-doc/en/fpd_rawmaterials_alumnium_powdercoating.htm (the edges will be black if you choose to have the panel powder coated)
Pars Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 (edited) ^ Do they do engraved lettering (and filled) over this? And how closely would this match an otherwise anodized enclosure (or I guess painted in the case of the top and bottom panels). Starting to sound like just getting the aluminum panels from Modushop might be the way to go. Edited November 22, 2011 by Pars
luvdunhill Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 I wouldn't count on it matching. I have had bad luck with this... I'll post some pics in a few weeks of the project when it's done and I think it's quite noticeable.
spritzer Posted November 28, 2011 Report Posted November 28, 2011 (edited) Front panel back from laser engraving. Still need to do some machining on it to get the volume pot to fit but it came out ok. Edited November 28, 2011 by spritzer
justin Posted November 28, 2011 Report Posted November 28, 2011 is that cermark/thermark on the engraving?
TMoney Posted November 28, 2011 Report Posted November 28, 2011 Beautiful job, Spritzer. I applaud the choice of silver. What does it say in the lower left corner?
Torpedo Posted November 28, 2011 Report Posted November 28, 2011 Very nice Birgir, I like it. Feel free to contact me if you ever decide to get rid of it
guzziguy Posted November 28, 2011 Report Posted November 28, 2011 (edited) What does it say in the lower left corner? The 'M' is hard to read, but I'm pretty sure it says "Mjölnir Audio". It sure would make sense for somebody whose middle name is Thor. Edited November 28, 2011 by guzziguy
