naamanf Posted April 30, 2010 Report Posted April 30, 2010 With having the constant need to tinker I was thinking about bypassing the internal amp of the A5s with some sort of toob amp. I like way the A5s sound but I think the amp is possibly holding them back a bit. Plus at low volumes it puts more power to the left speaker than the right which is really annoying. I was thinking about picking up something like the Miniwatt N3. Any better suggestions?
n_maher Posted April 30, 2010 Report Posted April 30, 2010 How much power do you think you need? I'm assuming you'll build something external...
jinp6301 Posted April 30, 2010 Report Posted April 30, 2010 Just wanted to let you know that there is a passive version of the A5s Audioengine - Upgrade your music
naamanf Posted April 30, 2010 Author Report Posted April 30, 2010 I don't think much power since I am using these near field. The internal amp is rated at 50w with a peak of 75w per ch. I doubt it can do that much though. I think a solid 5-10w would be plenty with more always being better. Edit: Yes it would be external. Also I figure since I already have these sitting here I might as well use them.
naamanf Posted April 30, 2010 Author Report Posted April 30, 2010 I figured you would say that. Enabler
n_maher Posted April 30, 2010 Report Posted April 30, 2010 I figured you would say that. Enabler Better you than me, I've been itching to build one since he announced it but the 12L Actives pretty much crushed that desire.
naamanf Posted May 1, 2010 Author Report Posted May 1, 2010 I t looks pretty do-able except I will will need some sort of pre-amp/volume control if I go that route.
swt61 Posted May 1, 2010 Report Posted May 1, 2010 I have a pair of balanced Luminous Audio passive volume controls that I can send. You can borrow them as long as you'd like, as I have no use for them in the foreseeable future.
cetoole Posted May 1, 2010 Report Posted May 1, 2010 High zin, so yeah, just wire a pot before the input.
n_maher Posted May 1, 2010 Report Posted May 1, 2010 I believe that Naaman tackled this problem in a whole different way.
naamanf Posted May 1, 2010 Author Report Posted May 1, 2010 Wasn't expecting to got that route but when an opportunity shows itself..... Still doesn't mean I shouldn't build something. I do think I would like to build something that could accommodate a wide range of speakers.
