Grahame Posted August 8, 2017 Report Posted August 8, 2017 Alternatively, is it *whisper* Trying to tell you its time to join the Marin 4K HDR OLED owners club. *whisper* 1
Grahame Posted August 8, 2017 Report Posted August 8, 2017 Meanwhile ... This is interesting https://www.theverge.com/2017/8/5/16102320/apple-tv-4k-hdr-support-rumors Most UHD HDR TV's have the apps for UHD HDR content (Amazon TV, Netflix, YouTube, Google Play, etc) but its the usual balkanazition of content over providers, so Apple may bring something to the table. Somewhat late to the party, hardware wise (cf Roku, NVidia Shield) but standards are evolving so maybe later is better. Compare to Amazon Fire TV, that although it does 4K , no HDR because HDMI (the port spec it shipped with)
Voltron Posted August 8, 2017 Report Posted August 8, 2017 That plasma TV is in SF, so it would not qualify for M4KHO membership. And having been burned in the past, I ain't buying a TV with no content and an uncertain path to getting any. 1
TMoney Posted August 8, 2017 Report Posted August 8, 2017 I had the same reservations as you, Al, but there is a lot more 4k and HDR content than I expected on Netflix/Amazon and the other streaming services.
Grahame Posted August 8, 2017 Report Posted August 8, 2017 (edited) I would say limited rather than none wrt content. Streaming or UHD HDR Blu Ray at the moment 4K OTA is coming , but what content ? https://www.theverge.com/2017/2/2/14488608/4k-tv-broadcasts-ajit-pai-atsc-3-hdr nevermind is 4K real or fake ? http://realorfake4k.com/ Edited August 8, 2017 by Grahame
n_maher Posted August 9, 2017 Report Posted August 9, 2017 Al, having come from a 720p set to the 4k Sammy that I've got now I'm a pretty happy camper. The perceived betterment is probably more due to 7yrs of TV tech improvements rather than the 4kishness but that said, it's a fracking beautiful picture. And the LG OLED tech owns the Sammy stuff.
Voltron Posted August 9, 2017 Report Posted August 9, 2017 I'm sure all of that is true, Nate, and 4K will likely be the next TV that I buy, but for now I'm glad I don't have to replace the plasma. 1
luvdunhill Posted August 9, 2017 Report Posted August 9, 2017 OTA 1080p content is vastly superior to anything the cable providers are serving up that I welcome 4K OTA. My TiVO setup is working out well as a media hub that combines streaming sources with OTA programming. There is some small annoyances with the pretty massive amount of bandwidth needed to shuffle that content around the house, combined with the TiVO Mini being a bit underpowered as a device...

revolink24 Posted August 10, 2017 Report Posted August 10, 2017 I find that compression is a bigger factor in quality to me than resolution - I'd rather watch a 1080p Blu-Ray than a 4k Netflix stream any day. UHD Blu-Rays though... oh man. Planet Earth II in UHD does... things to me. 3

It's surprisingly good and immediately you can tell the difference between that, ripped and cable provider content.
Grahame Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 Then there are things like this ...https://cordcuttingreport.com/2017/01/25/hdhomerun-review/

I swear to god, it took less than 10 minutes. I went to the website to search for installation instructions, and the website popped up with a link to my actual device functioning in my home. I will need a better antenna, though, unless I want to watch a lot of SD CCTV content.

luvdunhill Posted August 12, 2017 Report Posted August 12, 2017 Yeah, had one of those HDThingies and it seems more like a Brent-level product. I would suggest the TiVO. It's like 5x more expensive though.
Voltron Posted August 12, 2017 Report Posted August 12, 2017 I was back in SF today and the green tint lines are back! Fuckers.
Hopstretch Posted August 12, 2017 Report Posted August 12, 2017 You probably need to clear your chakras or something. It's picking up negative waves. 1
ironbut Posted August 25, 2017 Report Posted August 25, 2017 Anyone bought the Oppo UDP-205. Considering one. I like the idea of a better build quality from the cheaper models.
luvdunhill Posted August 26, 2017 Report Posted August 26, 2017 No wires!Going to try and cram another HDMI input coming from the wall plate with the wire you see (subwoofer out from upcoming soundbar). 3
