grawk Posted November 4, 2013 Report Posted November 4, 2013 I agree it still has uses, it just moved down a lot of people's list when the tuners all went external. That said, it wasn't ever on my list of features I wanted, and I've maybe used it 3 times in 10 years. Our solution to "the kids want to play video games" is a tv upstairs without a tuner on it, just an appletv and an xbox.
Dusty Chalk Posted November 4, 2013 Report Posted November 4, 2013 It also went down on people's lists (peoples' lists?) when TiVo became a thing, and people could always watch the other thing later.
grawk Posted November 4, 2013 Report Posted November 4, 2013 Here's a solution: Have 4 tvs mounted in your living room, with the new minimal bezels. Then you can do 4K for movies, and when you're watching anything else, you can have up to 4 things playing at once for your short attention span needs! 1
n_maher Posted November 4, 2013 Report Posted November 4, 2013 I haven't given PIP a thought in more than a decade. I'm with Dusty on this, Tivo/DVR's pretty much eliminated my need for it. My one gripe with the Sammy so far is the deblurring settings which appear to be causing more jutter than reducing blur. I currently have it cranked to the lowest setting after the highest looked like watching a pan-and-scan DVD from days of old. Next step is to shut if off completely.
shellylh Posted November 4, 2013 Report Posted November 4, 2013 I think I used PIP exactly one time in my life just to try it out. It would try me crazy to have video games being played right next to a movie. Maybe that's what happens to people without kids though.
grawk Posted November 4, 2013 Report Posted November 4, 2013 I have kids, and if one of them started playing a video game while I was watching a movie, I'd have 1 fewer kid. 2
n_maher Posted November 4, 2013 Report Posted November 4, 2013 I have kids, and if one of them started playing a video game while I was watching a movie, I'd have 1 fewer kid. Ditto. Except I'd just have one disappointed kid.
dsavitsk Posted November 4, 2013 Report Posted November 4, 2013 The Sammy has been purchased and is cued up and ready for its first family movie night. First impressions are very good and luckily best buy had dropped their price $50 from just last week. I'm curious how the networking works on yours. For us, with wireless it would not really connect at all (with 3 different APs, one of which is "enterprise class"), and wired, while it said it was connected to the local network, it would claim the connection to the internet failed repeatedly. Samsung claimed that this was evidence that the network was at fault, and not the TV. That seemed plausible, but the Roku worked fine, our computers worked fine, and AT&T spent hours looking for errors and could not find anything suspicious. The one thing that baffles me is the lack of picture in picture. I don't know that it baffles me, but I do kind of miss it. Useful for keeping a game on in the corner that I only sort of want to see.
n_maher Posted November 4, 2013 Report Posted November 4, 2013 I'm curious how the networking works on yours. It successfully performed some of the software checks at startup and is getting guide and program info which I presume comes via the internets and not over the wire but I could be wrong. I'll try the browser or some other clearly networked feature tonight and let you know.
swt61 Posted November 4, 2013 Report Posted November 4, 2013 I haven't given PIP a thought in more than a decade. I'm with Dusty on this, I agree, and didn't use the feature once on my 50" Panny in the 5 years I had it.

Doug, did either you or ATT use sniffer software to examine the exchanges to and from the TV? It would be interesting to see if the TV just wasn't sending or responding, or if there was an application error.
Matt_Carter Posted June 15, 2014 Report Posted June 15, 2014 (edited) I've had my Panasonic VT25 for years now and still think great compared to anything I've seen to date. If you can actually find a Panasonic plasma any more you might want to get extended warranty though, I have had some problems where it shuts off and goes to error code because the fan fails, nothing a couple smacks to the back can't fix, but still an issue. A good site for TV reviews is http://www.digitalversus.com/tv-television.html Edited June 21, 2014 by Matt_Carter
tkam Posted July 3, 2014 Author Report Posted July 3, 2014 Samsung announced they are ending plasma screen production on November 30th.
luvdunhill Posted July 3, 2014 Report Posted July 3, 2014 Samsung announced they are ending plasma screen production on November 30th. Yup. My F8500 is simply amazing...
Hopstretch Posted July 3, 2014 Report Posted July 3, 2014 Yup. My F8500 is simply amazing... Tried to buy one. Can't get them in the UK any more.
Hopstretch Posted July 4, 2014 Report Posted July 4, 2014 Seems Amazon.co.uk sells them? Only the 51-inch and all the sellers look sketchy.
Riotvan Posted July 4, 2014 Report Posted July 4, 2014 Glad i got my hands on a Panny GT60 last year, looks like 4k oled at a decent price with proven reliabilty is still several years away. Also seems it's very tricky to get plasma at 4k for home use: http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/4k-plasma-201311133417.htm
Dusty Chalk Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 There's a couple plasmas under Amazon's warehouse deals.
bozebuttons Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 I love my Panny 65ZT60 plasma,I have a 50 inch fd111 Kuro in my bedroom. I am in the Plasma camp.If I was in the market for another Tv the Sammy F8500 would be on my Radar because the Panny is no longer available at a sane price. 1
tkam Posted July 8, 2014 Author Report Posted July 8, 2014 Amazon has the 60" F8500 for $2400 - not sure if that's a good price or not. I sort of want to get one even though I don't have a need. I'm going to miss plasma screens 3
Dusty Chalk Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 I sort of want to get one even though I don't have a need. I'm going to miss plasma screens This ^
MexicanDragon Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 Todd... is 60 large enough? May want to go 65. Either way, get it... but Abe's of Maine has it for 1640$ http://www.abesofmaine.com/item.do?item=SSPN60F8500&id=SSPN60F8500&l=PLA&gclid=CjwKEAjwre6dBRC94d-Gma7g3wcSJACNatZer7vI7YrM-b6gYjHKtZMlstEgHtoOoHxPKWj0ZvxrihoCSKHw_wcB with a free wall mount. Hmmm... I want to wall mount my 60" plasma now. **BRENT**
n_maher Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 I don't think Abe's is to be trusted or wasn't a few years ago. 1
HiWire Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 Got my plasma Panasonic TC-P42ST30 for $800 a few years ago. The picture still looks fantastic and it works well with games. I've never tried the 3D function, though.
