Voltron Posted July 29, 2011 Report Posted July 29, 2011 Well, that's not going to stop him from buying them...
grawk Posted July 29, 2011 Report Posted July 29, 2011 They sound best with a blue hawaii besides, this is head-case, not "save me from buying shit case"
Duggeh Posted July 29, 2011 Report Posted July 29, 2011 Don't have a BH. Don't need the headphones. Money better left in the bank. Just bought an SR-003 anyway. I give myself 2 days.
swt61 Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 I thought they sounded fantastic from Marc's hot rodded KGSS.
HeadphoneAddict Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 I thought they sounded fantastic from Marc's hot rodded KGSS. Now my hot rodded KGSS.
manaox2 Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 I can't remember if I owned two or three pairs. But I agree with Deepak. The high-pitched squeal always happened at least intermittently. I always had to short the pins eventually to try removing it for a listening session. I wouldn't even consider a pair if overseas without that warranty to lean on.
Duggeh Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 Koss servicing in europe means sending things to Switzerland i think. I hadn't realised that the squeal issue was so prevelant though.
wink Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 "Agreed (couldn't stand that wall of sound, with no space). And every pair I owned eventually developed the high frequency squeal." "I love the ESP950, among my favorite headphones." Proof of the mnemonic "YMMV"....
spritzer Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 The squealing issue could be due to the practically unprotected drivers. Koss did make reservations for a voltage divider in the amp to cut the bias supply so this makes it a more likely cause. I've been itching to get a ESP950 and fit the drivers in the HE90 frame I have here. Groupbuy?
chinsettawong Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 How about you give me some measurements and I custom make the drivers for you to try? Wachara C.
spritzer Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 Now that would be a brilliant idea. I would also be open for some machined adapter plates so I can try my collection of Lambda drivers in those frames.
chinsettawong Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 That would be fun. Let's do it. Wachara C.
Leonardo Drummond Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 (edited) Guys, I'm not sure whether I should post this in here or in the amp section, but as I don't want to open a new thread for this, here it goes: Which one do you think would be best for an O2 MKI, a modded 727A or a 323S? Will they be a significant upgrade over my SS eXStatA? Edited August 14, 2011 by Leonardo Drummond
padam Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Yes it certainly would I would go no less than a modded 727A. I don't know if I get flamed for that but on today's micro meet I was shocked by a power cable change on the 717, it was much better sounding than it was before. Apart from the bass which I find hard to get accustomed to it was quite stunning.
Leonardo Drummond Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Thanks for the help, Padam (not the first time you helped me, eh?)! It's quite hard to find the mod instructions, do you know where I can find it? I've got no DIY skills yet so I'd ask a friend of mine who's an engineer to do the mod for me, but because of that, it would be great to have all the information and all the detailed steps needed to do it!
padam Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 (edited) Does not look hard to do, should only take a few minutes. It is possible that you take out the sockets and send them to someone who does the mod, and put them back - if you don't need to re-set the voltage which is a little trickier (or you just use a step up transformer). Because it is probably in Japan where you can probably find one the quickest. Edited August 15, 2011 by padam
Leonardo Drummond Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Thanks again, Padam! Fortunately as I buy a lot of equipment from the UK, I have 220V and 110V sockets in my bedroom, so either a US or a japanese unit will be fine! Now I just have to go find a used 727A.
spritzer Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 There is no way to just modify the boards and slip them into a factory spec amp as it has to be adjusted for offset and balance. Get that wrong and the servo shuts off the output.
Leonardo Drummond Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Oh dear... that doesn't sound easy.
spritzer Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Go easy on the pots and you will be fine.
Leonardo Drummond Posted August 16, 2011 Report Posted August 16, 2011 That's better then! Thanks, Birgir. I usually don't listen to music very loud, so I suppose that won't be much of a problem. By the way, is that something an electronic engineer would know how to do easily?
