mypasswordis Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 I don't think that's the case with headphones, though, since we're not putting speakers into a wall and doing the hand blocking thing still has a big effect on sound.
spritzer Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 By putting the hand behind the speakers you are reflecting the backwave and it is messing with the sound. Even on the ported SR-007Mk2 this is still a factor.
mypasswordis Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 Well what I'm trying to say is since my hand reflects backwave so well, doesn't that mean the Lambda cage, even if it is quite open, is still reflecting some of the backwave back?
spritzer Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 It is but most of it is intentional to make them sound airy. That's also why the chassis isn't flat.
mypasswordis Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 Have I ever mentioned that Stax are badass? If I haven't, I'm doing it now. Interesting, thanks for the info!
mypasswordis Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 Holy brightness, Batman! Two layers of felt was just too much for the ET1000 and made it almost ridiculously inefficient and didn't really sound better so I had to take the second layer out and tried to compensate with a reflex dot. Yeah, I think I made it a bit too big. I also blutak'd the insides and the outsides. Everything is now properly smurf'd.
spritzer Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 It's always fun to see some old Stax stuff which was clearly made in very limited numbers as it wasn't a part of the normal range. SRA-3S non-integrated version.
tyrion Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 I have Alex's O2 mk1, my 4070 and Omega with me for the weekend. I've been doing some switching between the 3 headphones on different tracks. I'm not volume matching but they all appear close in terms of volume. I think I have to with Al's ranking (Al, I think this is how you ranked them). Omega 4070 (very close second) O2 mk1 I wish I could put into words the reasons. I just find the first two more enjoyable. The first two seem faster with better dynamics. That's the best I can come up with beyond just liking the Omega and 4070 better. Sorry Jp, the 4070 is staying. However, if you want me to send them up to you to try out, no problem.
The Monkey Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 Jebus. I don't think I have ever heard the 4070, but I am surprised to read that some like it more than the O2 mk1. I look forward to trying them at CJ. How isolating are they?
tyrion Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 They are not completely isolating. There is some leakage but nothing like an open headphone. If I send them to Jp, he can send them to you next to try out.
mypasswordis Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 Very nice! I also hope to hear an SR-Omega and 4070 soon. Probably at CanJam. In other news, anyone following the HF ortho thread? So the O2MkI pads really aren't leather? I wants me some $45/pr O2 pad clones...
luvdunhill Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 So the O2MkI pads really aren't leather? nice proverbial mouse drop... you're going to start a stampede! .. or at least as much of a stampede as is possible with a single baby elephant and a viking...
mypasswordis Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 I think it's more of a running gag at this point. As in I hope no one takes the bait. I also hope to get some good feedback about the ET1000 tomorrow since I'm still not 100% satisfied with the sound but don't really know what it is that's wrong or what I can do to fix it. Maybe I'm just going crazy trying to find something else to mod.
deepak Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 (edited) SR-007A pads ftw! Go Elephas rage against the Stax thread Probably also explains why the SR-007A pads cost so much more than MK1 pads in Japan. Toot toot all aboard the leather train Edited March 21, 2010 by deepak
Deadneddz Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Real leather or not, the MK2 pads are sexy and much more comfortable. I want to put some on my MKI and turn it into the MK3.
mypasswordis Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Wait what? O2MkI pads are a lot cheaper? Do they approach $45/pr? But yeah, Mk2 pads ftw, I'd get a pair or three to put on my headphones if I had the funds.
The Monkey Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Where are you guys getting the mk2 pads? Audiocubes? Kuboten?
deepak Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Wait what? O2MkI pads are a lot cheaper? Do they approach $45/pr? But yeah, Mk2 pads ftw, I'd get a pair or three to put on my headphones if I had the funds. You can't buy MK1 pads anymore but they were about 6000 JPY, MK2 pads are 8800 JPY Where are you guys getting the mk2 pads? Audiocubes? Kuboten? I got mine from Kuboten.
mypasswordis Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Ah that sucks. =/ I'm too cheap to pay $100 for a pair of pads.
Deadneddz Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 AudiocubesII is overpriced. I got my MKI pads a while back when they still were available from Kuboten and it was 75 bux(sorry Justin, not 45 cheap). I'm sure you could get a hold of some MKII pads for cheaper than AudiocubesII. Hit Craig up.
mypasswordis Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 One of the headphones I'm planning on bringing to CJ is a fully decked out/modded ESP10 to show that Americans do or did know how to make non-shitty 'stats, but they require pads since the original oil-filled pads are not so oil-filled anymore. Since I'm a cheap bastard if I can get ahold of a pair of O2 clone pads for $45 from India I'll go with that, but failing that I'll def contact Craig, thanks.
The Monkey Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 deepak, are you sure you can't get mk1 pads anymore? I think AC has them--expensive, though.
Deadneddz Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Justin, better yet since I have a spare set of new MKI pads, I can hook you up with the set thats on my O2 right now for 45 shipped. Its still in almost brand new condition(full, not compressed w/no deep wrinkles or anything). Been meaning to try some MK2 pads so maybe that will push me to do so.
mypasswordis Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Seriously? Wow, that's awfully nice of you to do so! If you decide to get the Mk2 pads let me know and I'll buy the MkI pads off you.
