Some of my favs:

Dan Simmons - Hyperion Cantos

Peter F. Hamilton - The Nights Dawn Trilogy, Pandora"s Star/Judas Unchained/The void (sequel trilogy to the PS/JU books)

Greg Bear - Eon (and its sequels)

Very good suggestions. Pandora"s Star/Judas Unchained work really well on their own as a 2 book series, and the Void Trilogy takes place hundreds of years later with the 3rd and final book still due August 2010. I liked the author enough to read his older Nights Dawn Trilogy" after the above, which isn't bad but not quite as good and actually just slightly weird but fun to read anyway.

Another suggestion is Larry Niven and Ed Lerner "Destroyer of Worlds", and the 2 books preceding it "Fleet of Worlds" and "Juggler of Worlds", which weren't as good but should be read in order I suppose (although Destroyer seemed to work well on it's own). And there a whole bunch of shorter Known Space novels that Dusty mentioned by Niven, which precede these latest 3.
