daveDerek Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 (edited) I'm not sure if Catcher has been made into a movie - yet. certainly, as an immensely popular work for near 6 decades there are those that would be chomping at the bit to do so. and since i can't find a more appropriate forum here goes: J.D. Salinger Dies at 91: The Hermit Crab of American Letters - TIME J. D. Salinger News - The New York Times J. D. Beefy Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 I never much cared for Catcher in the Rye. I found that the Holden was far too much of a whiny little bitch for me to feel even the slightest amount of empathy. So thanks, J D Salinger...... you gave use the first emo. Quote
jinp6301 Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 But this means that we'll see his unpublished short stories soon Quote
blessingx Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 Supposedly, he wrote just as much in his non-publishing stage as prior. Hate to say I've been waiting for this moment, but I do wonder what else may get published now. Perfect Day for Bananafish was a favorite and much younger I used to read the last 80 pages of Franny & Zooey before making any important decision. F&Z even seemed like a response to the fans of Rye. And of course take into account the narration setting of Rye when talking of Holden's moods. Plus there are so many fun shorts in New Yorker, etc. that never made it to book form. Funniest/saddest story I know of Salinger is that Charlie Chaplin stole his girlfriend. Quote
jinp6301 Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 blessingx, do you know where I can find the New Yorker stories? I used to be pretty obsessed with F&Z during sophomore year Quote
blessingx Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 I grabbed them off microfiche in a college library as a wedding present for a friend. Looks like they may be on the Complete New Yorker DVD box set too: Complete New Yorker (DVD) at The New Yorker Store Well worth your $20, but I have that set and although I'm heading out of town tomorrow, if you give me a week I can hunt and output as PDF (I think). They were scattered across different publications, but many there. Remember one had the great opening "If you wait long enough every city becomes a girl." Quote
blessingx Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 (edited) Guess what just popped up? Postscript: J. D. Salinger: Back Issues : The New Yorker EDIT: Damn, subscribers only. Edited January 29, 2010 by blessingx Quote
Duggeh Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 I have to say I was more put out by the death of Robert B Parker a week or so ago. Quote

Voltron Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 I guess my First Edition hardback of Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction will be worth a little more now. [/crass self-interested take on event] Quote
