feckn_eejit Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 Let's have a show of hands... who here isn't guilty of doing this as a child?Father's PSB Passif IIa speakers had grille cloths on them...
aerius Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 Let's have a show of hands... who here isn't guilty of doing this as a child? I wasn't guilty, but it wasn't for lack of trying. I managed to put a few dents in the protective metal grills of my dad's speakers.
CarlSeibert Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 Hand up. The tweed grills didn't invite much foolishness (Yes, there were two for most of my childhood, but I do remember the upgrade to stereo. I was about 5) and those tubes were waaay too scary to mess with.
manaox2 Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 My dad didn't have much of a stereo really, so I made up for not being able to ruin speakers by sticking a PB&J in the VCR.
Duggeh Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 My dad didn't have much of a stereo really, so I made up for not being able to ruin speakers by sticking a PB&J in the VCR. I fed toast to the VCR. Also magnets made the TV have pretty colours.
Fitz Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 My dad didn't have much of a stereo really, so I made up for not being able to ruin speakers by sticking a PB&J in the VCR. I figured out how to open the cover on VHS tapes and drew on the tape so I could see it on the TV. It didn't work.
Voltron Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 I definitely made rainbows on the TV with magnets and I think I left them there too long one time. Oh, and a friend of my son's did in fact poke in the dust caps on my Gallo speakers but I was able to pop them out with balled up duct tape, sticky side out.
manaox2 Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 I figured out how to open the cover on VHS tapes and drew on the tape so I could see it on the TV. It didn't work. Another area a magnet may come in handy.
Voltron Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 I used to pee in people's food You stopped doing that before DanJam, though, right?
Duggeh Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 You stopped doing that before DanJam, though, right? You didn't think that was mayonnaise in the jar did you?
Voltron Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 Mayonnaise? He did say "pee," didn't he?
Fitz Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 Mayonnaise? He did say "pee," didn't he? He's moved on to bigger and better things.
melomaniac Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 Well, since I have two pairs of Maggie speakers in the house, I thought I would be tempted by ortho headphones. And I did get close to falling for the Audez'e - timing wasn't right just then - but I'm still pretty happy with my tube-fed DT880s...
Voltron Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 He's moved on to bigger and better things. Damn I am glad I didn't have any sandwiches that weekend.
Duggeh Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 Damn I am glad I didn't have any sandwiches that weekend. Just don't ask where the cafe sourced the ingredients to make fresh biscuits for Brent after they ran out.
deepak Posted January 12, 2010 Author Report Posted January 12, 2010 A review is up: Magnepan MG 1.7: Unqualified Triumph | AVguide
aardvark baguette Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 Anyone know the minimum space required between the speakers and the listening position? The typical amount for magnepans in general?
Wmcmanus Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 Near field listening is actually quite nice with Maggies. I wouldn't get closer than about 5 feet, but then I wouldn't sit any further back than 8 feet in most rooms either. I don't think that should be a terribly big concern, although it would be if you had less than 2-3 feet behind the Maggies and less than 2-3 feet behind the listener. I don't think they would do terribly well in a 10' x 10' bedroom, but then again, not too many speakers would so that's kind of a moot point.
jvlgato Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 Anyone know the minimum space required between the speakers and the listening position? The typical amount for magnepans in general? Agree w/ wmcmanus. At least w/ my Apogees (which I assume are similar since Magnepan put them out of business for patent infringement), 5-8 feet was about right. Too close and the soundstage does not develop, too far, and it's too narrow. But they do need space around them to breathe. And they were VERY sensitive to placement - toe-in, distance from walls, each side being the same distance to listener, all needed to be very precise to have the best effect. But boy, when you get it all right, it's just magic! Who's the violinist sketched in your icon? Heifetz, maybe?
aardvark baguette Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 Heifetz. I'm going to measure my room tonight, not sure how big it is. I'd have no problem giving the speakers 3 feet or so from the back wall, but I'm uncertain how much room there would be between the speakers & couch, and couch & wall. Its basically a completely empty bedroom I can do whatever I want with, I just have to move out all the crap I put in there when I moved.
aardvark baguette Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 Ok, the room is about 10 feet wide, left to right, and 12 feet deep front to back. Sounds like it may be pushing it a bit? I am looking into monitors and small speakers too. I was glancing at the mapleshade site and noticed they/he thinks this monitor sounds better than the magico minis.
