punkaroo Posted December 25, 2009 Report Posted December 25, 2009 IIRC, I listened to a pair of 701s at a meet being amped by a C2C...and while I liked their detail, they had NO BASS! Quote

MomijiTMO Posted December 25, 2009 Report Posted December 25, 2009 No bass... none at all? Hyperbole or was that amp that bad? Quote
atothex Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 Source probably wasn't great either. Yawn. Quote
mypasswordis Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 What I wouldn't give for a thick juicy slice of steak right now... pink, slightly bloody and tender, grilled to perfection. I'm hungry. The thread title also reminds me of Biggie (when I'm less hungry): Quote
Chekhonte Posted December 26, 2009 Author Report Posted December 26, 2009 I think that's the best thing that came out of this thread. I could really eat the hell out of a good steak right now. I wish it wasn't too awful out to start the grill. Quote
mypasswordis Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 How about trying your hand at grilling inside the house? It'll be fun trying to not have the smoke detector constantly go off, your house burn down, everything get covered in soot/grease, death caused by oxygen deprivation, etc etc. I guess waiting would be a better idea for us both. I've got a stockpile of "beef" patties that was supposed to be for my birthday 1.5 years ago that I have yet to use. Quote
Beefy Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 All this talk of eating Beef is making me nervous..... Quote
guzziguy Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 All this talk of eating Beef is making me nervous..... As you as you're not grain- or corn-fed, you probably don't have too much to worry about. Quote

When I lived in Illinois there were reports every winter of families dieing from asphyxiation trying to heat their house with a grill. And beefy, we're coming from you. Quote
xand1x Posted December 27, 2009 Report Posted December 27, 2009 Just picked up a pair of K701s recently (my second time owning them). I have a recabled pair this time and I can't really say if that makes a difference or not but I think they are keepers now. I do agree that they need a half decent amp to sound good. After listening to these for 2 weeks I can say that these headphones sound like they try to stay out of the way as much as possible..almost as if they are indifferent to the music. I have the K1000 and K340 and after using the K701 and switching to either phone I really notice their strengths and weaknesses (K340 - amazing mids and very natural sounding but soundstage not as open ; K1000 - sounds faster, more engaging, soundstage is bigger, but the bass though punchy does not extend as low). cetoole Posted December 27, 2009 Report Posted December 27, 2009 Mmm, beef. So Matt, I presume your new K701 is a fairly high S/N? I know I just hated my low S/N, been tempted to try one again at some point, but havnt quite cared enough to yet. Quote
mypasswordis Posted December 27, 2009 Report Posted December 27, 2009 What's the consensus on variations in sound of the 701 by s/n? Quote

Relative to the most recent serial numbers that most acquire if purchased new mine are actually somewhat low. I think AKG has reached the 20000-30000 mark right now (or above). Mine are around 7000. My last K701 was around 1000 if my memory is correct. Quote
morphsci Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 Recabling direct to each driver will make a much larger difference in the sound than the serial number will make. I also agree with the comparison of the K701 and K340 especially regarding the midrange. Quote
Asr Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 What's the consensus on variations in sound of the 701 by s/n? The ones below 3500 sound the best. Quote
morphsci Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 The ones below 3500 sound the best. And of those, the ones below 1500 absolutely kick-ass-and-take-names. Quote
mrarroyo Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 And of those, the ones below 1500 absolutely kick-ass-and-take-names. Man, does this mean I should have kept mine? It was S/N 143X. Quote
Dusty Chalk Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 That depends on whether or not 'x' was an even or odd number. Or zero. Quote

Fitz Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 In this case, the best ones are where x is NaN. Very difficult to find though. Quote
Chekhonte Posted December 29, 2009 Author Report Posted December 29, 2009 I just put " - " in front of my serial. Mine were made over over 13.7 billion years ago. The voice coils were forged by elves inside of the great singularity. The diaphragm is made from the foreskin of Chaos, the oldest and fiercest of gods that existed before there was anything. I'm selling them for 200 shipped OBO. Quote
swt61 Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 Do you find that the diaphragms tighten up if you play Diana Krall? Quote

Wait, tighten up as in stretch out or shrink in? Quote
