skullguise Posted January 11, 2013 Report Posted January 11, 2013 Ian, sounds a tiny bit like some of Caleb Carr's novels, have you read him? If so, any comparison?
en480c4 Posted January 11, 2013 Report Posted January 11, 2013 I haven't, but I'm always looking for something new. If/when I get to them, I'll let you know how they compare.
Dusty Chalk Posted January 11, 2013 Report Posted January 11, 2013 Is that like a prep course? You'll do fine.
Dusty Chalk Posted January 12, 2013 Report Posted January 12, 2013 Me: somehow managed to start three books -- the aforementioned John Dies at the End (large paperback, does not travel well), Hide Me Among the Graves (via Kindle app on mah phoneblet, can read it anywhere and have it with me), and started the next Dresden Files novel, whose name escapes me.
grawk Posted January 12, 2013 Author Report Posted January 12, 2013 I'm reading hide me among the graves too 1
Dusty Chalk Posted January 12, 2013 Report Posted January 12, 2013 I am totally digging it -- found it in my Kindle queue, but can't remember why I'm reading it. I thought you recommended it. Or maybe it was Neil Gaiman. I forget...
grawk Posted January 12, 2013 Author Report Posted January 12, 2013 it was probably me. Tim Powers is my favorite author.
blessingx Posted January 16, 2013 Report Posted January 16, 2013 Last Saunders post [scouts honor], but NPR did a piece on him today. How she gets off pretending people haven't been talking about him for a decade I can't understand, but good run down of the stories in the collection if anyone is interested. blessingx Posted January 20, 2013 Report Posted January 20, 2013 Reading... err watching, Chekhov's Misery (aka Grief).
MoonShine Posted January 21, 2013 Report Posted January 21, 2013 Just finished: Starting: Enjoyed Half-Safe Ric, thanks!
MoonShine Posted January 24, 2013 Report Posted January 24, 2013 Just finished on audiobook: Good stuff. Bryson is a gem (and a damn fine narrator as well).
Dusty Chalk Posted February 1, 2013 Report Posted February 1, 2013 I'm reading hide me among the graves tooFinished this on the plane, that was fantastic, what should I read by him next? Sent frum mah phone-blet using Tapatalk.
grawk Posted February 1, 2013 Author Report Posted February 1, 2013 Finished this on the plane, that was fantastic, what should I read by him next?Sent frum mah phone-blet using Tapatalk. Drawing of the Dark, since you're on a beer trip Anubis Gate if you're interested in an egyptian magic steampunk romp Stress of Her Regard for more poetic vampires Honestly tho, pick any of his books you can find.
Dusty Chalk Posted February 1, 2013 Report Posted February 1, 2013 Alright! So he's one of those authors that I should just read everything by Sent frum mah phone-blet using Tapatalk.
Dusty Chalk Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 Three Days to Never Can't find my copy of John Dies at the End, I think I was reading it right up until just a couple hours before I took off for San Francisco, but for the life of me, I can't recall where I went for breakfast/lunch, which is where I would have left it if I left it anywhere.
en480c4 Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 The Fifty Year Sword by Mark Z. Danielewski Quite entertaining, and a much easier read than the unorthodox formatting would leave you to believe (provided you don't get lost in it). It definitely makes me want to re-read House of Leaves.
robm321 Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 Just finished this. Very good if you're interested in running or just biology in general. It digs into how animals, insects and humans overcome environment and endurance challenges from the cellular level and up.
Dusty Chalk Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 Prequels should generally always be read after the books written before it.Quoted for truth, from "Kim" of the Scantasy and Fience Fiction book club on GoodReads.
Dusty Chalk Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 Finished Three Days To Never, which was astounding. Starting Salvage And Demolition. Sent frum mah phone-blet using Tapatalk.
Dusty Chalk Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 ...which was excellent too albeit short. Starting The Stress of Her Regard. Sent frum mah phone-blet using Tapatalk.
grawk Posted March 6, 2013 Author Report Posted March 6, 2013 glad you liked 3dtn. Stress is mindfuckingly good 1
