Icarium Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 His budget is 350 bucks... I don't think he minds camping ebay/audiogon, but if its something that is immediately available then that would be more ideal. I know sony direct drive for cheap bucks is a pretty good deal so maybe a list of models/links for those would be perfect.
swt61 Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 Does he have experience setting up tables/cartridges, or is he a newbie?
grawk Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 I like my PS-X500s combined with the sumiko pearl cartridge, total cost was under $200 for the pair. Then a hagerman bugle for the phonostage and you're out under $350
Icarium Posted October 26, 2009 Author Report Posted October 26, 2009 Does he have experience setting up tables/cartridges, or is he a newbie? He's a newb he says. Thanks Grawk I will link him to this thread.
jp11801 Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Dan C craigsist.org is the place for turntables as local pick up is really preferred. If he can score a TT with the original box off ebay then that is cool as well. Sony PS-x5, 6 or 7s are great also the ps-x500 or 600 are cool, pioneer PL 500-600 series are decent. Do not get a p-mount tonearm as it really limits the cart you can get. If he needs a hand doing set up I'd be open to lending a hand.
grawk Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 since jp#s is why I have the rig I have, he's a good person to listen to
philodox Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 I really like my crazy-old gerrard and marantz setup and if you arent too picky about condition you could get that for $350 easy.
NekoAudio Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Don't forget you need some vinyl. Grabbing a big collection off Craigslist or eBay might be a decent place to start, although the condition may be questionable, unless your friend already has some specific albums he wants.

And the old Dual + Ortofon I bought was in that neighborhood as well. Of course I owned the NAD pre with phono already so that would up the total.
