mypasswordis Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 I'm pretty sure amarra DOES buffer everything to ram... Time to be hardcore and get some ECC RAM.
Hopstretch Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Quad-core, 27-inch LED iMac with 16 gigs of RAM. Yeeeeeeeeesssss pleeeeeeeeaaaasssseee!
Voltron Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Quad-core, 27-inch LED iMac with 16 gigs of RAM. Yeeeeeeeeesssss pleeeeeeeeaaaasssseee! That machine will seriously kick ass. With the 2.8GHz Core i7 processor and 2TB onboard storage, of course. Why the hell is your last.fm display so "stretched" out?
Hopstretch Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 so "stretched" out? Is it messing with the page width? I'll prune.
thrice Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Quad-core, 27-inch LED iMac with 16 gigs of RAM. Yeeeeeeeeesssss pleeeeeeeeaaaasssseee! That is pretty awesome. Damn.
Hopstretch Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 That is pretty awesome. Damn. There are some minor downsides.
Voltron Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 That is a lot of downsides. Not sure that the new Mac Mini is anything I need to trade in my recent one for. Still happy they are smart enough to keep up the line.
VPI Posted October 20, 2009 Author Report Posted October 20, 2009 Well I couldn't convince the Geniuses to sell me a Mini yet. They are all behind the black curtain. They wouldn't even tell me when they were doing the big unveil so I could go back. The way I see it is this is a significant upgrade for the same price with the faster processor and 4 gb Ram standard. I was going to pay over a grand for a 2.26 ghz with the same RAM last week and now I will pay 799.00. Now if they will just sell me one.
Voltron Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Those are good upgrades, no doubt, just not sure that selling my 2.0GHz/4GB model is worth the effort.
n_maher Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 I'm hopeful there will be a glut of refurb 20" Imacs. That's my second option if the mini doesn't pan out. Those are good upgrades, no doubt, just not sure that selling my 2.0GHz/4GB model is worth the effort. Depends on how much you hope to get for it.
tyrion Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Those are good upgrades, no doubt, just not sure that selling my 2.0GHz/4GB model is worth the effort. I agree, not enough to justify a change.
The Monkey Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 i bet you'll only have to discharge your weapon once. Good point; I mean, they are geniuses.
melomaniac Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 unless you opt for the new server version ($999, 2x 500GB) a mini as a music server is a PITA since you'll run out of space. I use a 80GB mini with three (!) external drives, and unfortunately the external drives get noisy, so it's not great even for headphone use. better than a laptop tho' since you won't drop wifi so easily. I just keep adding drives until I find a silent huge one that does it all ;-)
jp11801 Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Ok choice time, either I go new $699 mini (4gb ram) or 13' MacBook pro with 4gb ram upgradeable to 8 gb after ram prices drop. The new mini would be cheaper of the two but I'm maxed at 4gb ram. The pro allows me to sell the netbook I use for patio listening/travel. While it is argueable that more than 4gb ram is overkill I recall 64mb of ram being overkill 12 years ago. Am I missing any obvious advantage/disadvantage between the two I'm thinking about?
grawk Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Why not stick with what you have until there is a compelling upgrade? Don't buy a computer for future upgrades, it'll be cheaper to get that later. I personally always shoot for the midpoint of what's current, or a top of the line previous gen system.
tyrion Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Buy a new mac mini with 4 gb and keep the netbook.

Yeah, because "buy behind the curve" is such popular advice in these parts!
Augsburger Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Our 15" MacBook Pro with this Processor- 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Memory 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRM, we can squeak by, and with the Amarra mini ready to roll? No real need to upgrade the ram?

VPI Posted October 20, 2009 Author Report Posted October 20, 2009 That's more than capable, but go full amarra and a uln8 Should really get an 8 Core Mac Pro with 32 Gb of ram to be safe.
jp11801 Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 That's more than capable, but go full amarra and a uln8 2 gbs and I bog down and get delays listening to music and surfing the web so 4gbs I should be ok but I am a big fan of extra ram just in case future software needs it.
Hopstretch Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Lucky Snowy supports up to 16TB then, eh? I can see it now -- "Keep your iTunes library in RAM. Latency begone!"
mypasswordis Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Might as well go with a real server. The Xeon 5500 series can do 72GB per blade.
