kevin gilmore Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 The biggest thing is to make sure you don't over voltage any of the resistors. There are parts of the circuit that have 4 resistors in series to make sure you can handle killovolt swings. The original used a lot of surface mount resistors that could handle only 250 volts each. If you use the standard rn60's they are good for more than 450 volts each.
spritzer Posted September 6, 2009 Author Report Posted September 6, 2009 1/2W PRP's can handle 500v and are relatively cheap so they make up the majority of the resistor with a few Rikens thrown in where PRP's weren't available. The 5W resistors are Mills. The only resistors I'm a bit worried about are the 5.1k/1W output units which will see the full fury of this beast... \
Voltron Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 Dr. G- Please put me down for a complete setup, and I've always wanted something with an RK50 so I will plan accordingly once somebody agrees to build this beast for me. Let me know when you want funds, but I appreciate you fronting costs for now. Thanks, Al

I'd offer to build it but I'm going to go out on a limb and say you'll want someone more skilled.
Voltron Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 I thought about sending you a PM, but I am just as happy to say publicly that I would trust you with this project without reservation or hesitation, Nate. Maybe I am just uninformed -- well, I am but you know what I mean -- but other than being meticulous like you are and having the soldering and other related skills that you possess, what is different about this project compared to your current 'stat effort or many other high-end projects you have completed successfully?
luvdunhill Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 Nate, retirement sucks. Hey, wanna build a few of these: DCPP Amp There are even PCBs available
spritzer Posted September 6, 2009 Author Report Posted September 6, 2009 Hmmm, those sweep tubes could work in an ESP amp...
swt61 Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 Nate, retirement sucks. And you did just order all that wire.
Icarium Posted September 9, 2009 Report Posted September 9, 2009 Sigh I think I'm going to have to pull out of my dream of a full fledged electrostatic. Added up how much I've spent on audio and it is a little bit terrifying :/ Almost 2x what I thought it was around... Sorry for being a weak flaker guys.

igorst Posted September 9, 2009 Report Posted September 9, 2009 sorry to hear that.....well you can always sell a bit of gear

You need to embrace the concept of denial my friend!
Icarium Posted September 9, 2009 Report Posted September 9, 2009 More than my takehome salary for a year (After my promotion with a 30 percent pay bump) is a little bit.. intimidating. I think the Esoteric UX-1 has to go.. I'm not sure I can bear to part with anything else at this point in time :/ If Justin finishes rebuilding the SS-1 or when my Dynaphat (Balanced dynafet) is complete.. then perhaps the Gilmore Balanced Reference can go to the line of people with dibs on it (dreamwhisper #1).
nattonrice Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 Added up how much I've spent on audio and it is a little bit terrifying When I bought my first amp I made a pact with my wallet I would never do that... the relationship has been smooth sailing ever since
Sherwood Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 My wife knows how much everything cost, so she does it for me ...
nattonrice Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 lol I gave up with my gf after she found out how much this teeny thing called a DACT cost
flecom Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 well, i havent built anything in quite a while, and been kind of out of the headphone thing for probably equally as long... but if there is an extra board, i would really love to get my hands on it and see how cheap i could build one... hell i only spent like $4~500 on my dynamight and everybody loved it at the meets lol
n_maher Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 well, i havent built anything in quite a while, and been kind of out of the headphone thing for probably equally as long... but if there is an extra board, i would really love to get my hands on it and see how cheap i could build one... hell i only spent like $4~500 on my dynamight and everybody loved it at the meets lol Uh, extra boards? Given that the boards for this will cost more than your dynamight it seems unlikely that there would be extras just floating around.
Sherwood Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 Of course, we are dealing with Kevin "Titanium Hammer" Gilmore.
kevin gilmore Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 Board sets will be available seperately.
spritzer Posted September 10, 2009 Author Report Posted September 10, 2009 Like Nate said, any illusions that this could be built on the cheap should be dropped ASAP. The tube sockets alone are 160$ and the boards ~250$ for the set. Then you have to find a lot of rare parts and match them.
Icarium Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 You forgot to mention that the boards can only have things soldered onto them with a solid platinum soldering iron. Dunno why exactly but I think it's a Japanese thing.
Sherwood Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 Also, that iron has to be blessed by a Shinto priest. And since every platinum soldering iron blessed by a Shinto priest was summarily shot into space, you need to find the asteroid impact craters and salvage the remains. Also, Lobstercunt has 3 for sale on A'gon.
swt61 Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 Also, Lobstercunt has 3 for sale on A'gon. OK, that one got me!
