The Monkey Posted July 27, 2009 Report Posted July 27, 2009 My music library is accessed via my iMac and iTunes. AFAIK, iTunes does not support high resolution audio files. Is there any way I can get hi rez files to pump out of the optical out of my iMac?
Hopstretch Posted July 27, 2009 Report Posted July 27, 2009 (edited) Yes. (See user title) Oh all right. Quit iTunes. Type "audio midi setup" in Spotlight. Open Audio MIDI Setup. Select desired sample rate in the Audio Output dropdown menu. Close Audio MIDI Setup. Open iTunes. Play back your high rez files. Edited July 27, 2009 by Hopstretch
The Monkey Posted July 27, 2009 Author Report Posted July 27, 2009 (edited) I'm not in front of the Mac now, but is it correct that it goes as high as 24/96 or can it go moar higher? Also, how do the hi rez files sound? And why is the sky blue? Edited July 27, 2009 by The Monkey
Hopstretch Posted July 27, 2009 Report Posted July 27, 2009 (edited) In theory, Core Audio (the OS X audio engine) should be cool with anything up to 24/192. In practice, sometimes things get a little weird. And high rez files tend to sound very, very much like the source they were derived from. Ping me when you get home. I have some samples you may enjoy. Edited July 27, 2009 by Hopstretch
Voltron Posted July 27, 2009 Report Posted July 27, 2009 It can be set on 192 but not for output through the optical, which is capped at 96. This is one of the wonders of Amarra because it handles the changes automatically without going back and forth with AudioMidi

I'm sorry that they decided to limit the Mini version at 24/96, though. I know you have to differentiate, but I don't think that was the place to do it.
guzziguy Posted July 27, 2009 Report Posted July 27, 2009 I was tempted to say that $600 will buy a couple or three of bottles of good whisk(e)y.
Voltron Posted July 28, 2009 Report Posted July 28, 2009 I have a fair bit piling up, but moar impotently, the files I am creating are 176.4.
tyrion Posted July 28, 2009 Report Posted July 28, 2009 What's $600 more to a baller like you? I agree, an extra $600 is nothing to guy like Stretch. Me, on the other hand, will stick with the mini version.
The Monkey Posted July 28, 2009 Author Report Posted July 28, 2009 Shut up. My children need wine! ;DA little bit of dinner roll just got lodged in my nostril. Steve Jobs is a dickhead for pretending to be an "audiophile."
Hopstretch Posted July 28, 2009 Report Posted July 28, 2009 Steve Jobs is a dickhead for pretending to be an "audiophile." In his defense, OS X handles audio a fair bit better than the alternative, which is one of the reasons why it's pretty much the default for pro apps.
deepak Posted July 28, 2009 Report Posted July 28, 2009 GEOS does just fine, thank you very much. Lies. The headphone out on my GEOS computer only plays the Friends theme song, nothing else.
blessingx Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 BTW, Computer Audiophile has a little app to speed the manual MIDI changes - Semi-Automatic Sample Rate Solution | Computer Audiophile
Dreadhead Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 hy it's pretty much the default for pro apps. It is in no way the default for pro apps. Protools is Windows most everything else is windows. Amarra and sonic studio are pretty much the biggest players in the mac world because they are one of the few to support it.

grawk Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 You can ignore logic if you want. The pro world doesn't
Dreadhead Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 Eat me. Again? I thought it was just a Can Jam romance .....
Dusty Chalk Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 Protools is Windows...Incorrect. If you're going to correct someone, at least be correct in your correction. It undermines your overall believability if you start posting falsehoods, whether purposefully or otherwise. It may not be the "default" operating system, but it has a very real, non-trivial foothold in the pro industry. Much more so than in muggle-land.
Dreadhead Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 My correction was correct. It is in fact not the default. Spend some time on gearslutz and you will see that a large majority of the protools guys use windows. The fact that protools is available for mac in no way undermines my believeability. I guess I could have been clearer that it was available for both. Holy overreaction bat man.
feckn_eejit Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 You can ignore logic if you want. The pro world doesn't Ignore Logic? For shame!!!
grawk Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 assuming gearslutz is an accurate representation of working professionals
