guzziguy Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 I'm having a bizarre network issue. Do you have a favorite free network sniffer that you can recommend for a Vista system? Thanks in advance for your recommendations. Quote
strid3r Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Wireshark comes to mind, but have not used it for Vista. Quote

Grahame Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 If you weren't using vista - you could have used netstumbler. http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/ instead you could try netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid NetStumbler for Windows Vista at WLAN Book.com Quote
guzziguy Posted July 17, 2009 Author Report Posted July 17, 2009 Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I went with Wireshark mostly because it was the first one suggested. It showed a TCP problem. Further investigation showed that parts of full size packets were being lost. At work, we recently changed the router. This was over the VPN and the first time I tried it that way since the changeover. Reducing the MTU of my connection allows me to work from home again. Hopefully our IT consultants will be able to figure out what the router problem is (bad MTU setting, no MTU discovery, ...?) and fix it. Worst case is a little network performance is lost over the VPN. Quote
matt fury Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Meh, consultants are good for nothing! Quote
