HD-650 Driver fried or cord?

Hey guys & gals,

I'm new hear but found this through Google. So awhile back I had my HD650's directly plugged into the front of my Mac Pro and I pushed my chair back and slightly bent the plug as well as the headphone jack in the Mac Pro. So for about two months, I'd have to jiggle the plug and keep tension on the cord in order to get sound from both drivers. Then about two weeks ago, I couldn't get the right driver to play. So I bought a new adapter to fit in my computer, nothing. So I tried my headphones in my Amp without the adapter, same deal, only the left side working. I've tried other headphones in my computer and they work.

So, did I blow a driver somehow or is it the cord, or?

Thanks for your time!

Brad

Welcome. Given the jiggling, I'm going to go with the cord-to-plug connection probably being the issue. But it's probably also worth trying a different pair of phones quickly to make sure it's not the jack on the Mac that's borken.

The jack is fine as my Shure E550's and el-cheapo headphones work. How do I check the cord-to-plug?

take a DMM, unplug the cable and measure all the connections. Every pin at the top should hook up to something at the bottom.

or you could just plug the plugs into the headphone backwards. Thats the plug that says "R" in the earpiece which has the braile letter "L" as well as the letter "L". If the noiseless channel moves taah-daah!

my bet is on the cord being defunct.

Brad,

Let me know what turn out. For $100 shipped, you can have a new set of driver from Senn.

Retail 2002

You might want to try just ordering a new cable for the hd650, it will run you under $20 shipped.

To change the cable is very easy with the hd650, just grab the fat plastic part near the drivers and gently wiggle it out, repeat for the other side.

If you're saying you bent the connector there's some solder points inside the 1/4" plug end that may have broken hence the replacement cable. If this doesn't fix the problem you might want to look into warrantying them through Sennheiser?

Good luck!
