Voltron
I like my P1 better from a looks perspective. I also don't understand the headphone output from RCA jacks on the back.
Icarium
Hrm does the rear output say headphone output? Based on the specs and squinting I'd guess it says through output.. like a loop out perhaps?
Hopstretch
It's a loop out. Pity they didn't go the extra mile and make it a pre.
Voltron
I read it quickly and then the blurry, Grado-like photo almost seems to say "headphone output" on the back. Loop makes the most sense.

Currawong
This means that, because the Japanese are big on the latest gear, P-1's will be available cheap.
Hopstretch
This means that, because the Japanese are big on the latest gear, P-1's will be available cheap. I'll take two, please.
purk
Yep...the older P1 sure looks nicer. If I could land a used Jap version P1 for around 1.2k I might do it.
Quadrangulum
That's a bit disappointing. It doesn't seem like a big upgrade over the P-1 if it can be called an upgrade at all. I guess Luxman America's going to sell it for $3000, more because of where the yen is in relation to the dollar today than because of improvements made to the design. For reference, these are the P-1 mkI specs Continuous Rated Output 4W+4W/8Ω and 2W+2W/16Ω, 1W+1W/32Ω and 500mW+500mW/64Ω, 53mW+53mW/600Ω Input Sensitivity / Impedance 1.0V/23KΩ balance 1.0V/66K Total Harmonic Distortion 0.008% or less (1kHz), 0.025% or less (20~20kHz) Frequency Response 20~20Hz (+0, - 0.1dB), 10~100kHz (+0, - 0.5dB) Signal-To-Noise Ratio (IHF-A) Above 108dB Inputs One pair of RCA sockets, One pair of Balanced sockets on XLR. raffy
You can only plugin two phones? Deal breaker. Ditto....I really liked the three headphone jacks on the original P-1.
penger
I just saw Jude's post on head-fi stating that it has the same power output of the P-200...
Aimless1
I would have liked to see the power output of he P1u match that of the P1. Balanced outputs and a remote would have been nice.
Currawong
I posted this on HF, but if one turns up at the local Stax dealer (small hi-fi shop) then I'll see if they wont let me take internal shots, though some will surely turn up on a Japanese blog somewhere sooner or later. Quadrangulum
On a Higher Note :: P-1u Headphone Amplifier A lot more details and pictures have been posted by On a Higher Note.
spritzer
This one seems to have only one primary on the transformer i.e. the input voltage can't be changed like on the old one. \
kelvinz
I got a email from on a higher note yesterday with the following information "Luxman are replacing the P-1 reference headphone amplifier with the P-1u; another class A design, the P-1u features ODNF 3.0 and is more than four times quieter than its predecessor. We are expecting our first shipment of the P-1u in September @ $3,000; these are expected to sell out quickly as initial supplies will be limited." Wonder will the pricing on the original P1 will drop to 2k.
Currawong
As I predicted: Luxman P-1. It has 3 days to go, so it will be interesting to see what price it fetches.
screaming oranges
4x quieter? I don't hear any noise in mine at all. What is 4x zero... Hmmm, maybe I should try it in the middle of the night, when it is dead quiet, to see if i hear anything. Not that I'd sell it anyway. I like my P-1. P1u... I guess the "u" means ultimate in this case, going by the claims of performance.
Aimless1
I laughed when I read that it's 4X quieter. Nice marketing. I can't say as I've heard anything on the P1 either.
screaming oranges
Aesthetically speaking, the original P1 is 4x better... Seriously though, the P1 does "look" better. Even the color scheme. However, I'd have upgraded to a P1u IF IT HAD BALANCED OUTPUTS. How did that one slip by them again?
aardvark baguette
ehh, don't most people use hp amps as the end-of-the-chain components though?
screaming oranges
Well, yes, but if everything is balanced from start to finish in the chain, might as well have balanced headphones too. But I'm just being picky now.
aardvark baguette
I thought you meant the outputs on the back. The front didnt even occur to me
