So I recently purchased a Yamaha RX-V365 A/V Receiver for use with my new 5.1 system.

The receiver has 3 HDMI inputs and one HDMI output. I had intended to hook my Blu-ray player and my satelite receiver into the A/V receiver via the HDMI inputs. As it turns out this receiver will not send audio to the speaker outputs via the HDMI inputs.

This seems pretty lame to me, as the whole idea with HDMI is to have one cable carrying evrything. It also seems that this is fairly common.

My receivers manual says to use the digit output of my Blu-ray into the digital input of the receiver. That works fine for 2 channel playback, but the manual says that it's only compatible with up to 96 kHz sampling frequency. It also states that "when PCM signals with a sampling frequency higher than 48 kHz are input, this unit is automatically set to the "straight" mode' (2 channel).

Additionally the manual states that "Sound field programs cannot be selected when the component connected to the multi channel input jacks is selected as the input source (in other words the multi channel analog inputs cannot be used with the surround features).

WTF???!!!

Am I missing something here? How the hell are you supposed to make use of the surround features of this receiver?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I think you're missing something. Don't know anything about that particular model, but if it has HDMI inputs than they will pass both the audio and video signals.

There is usually an option in the setup menu that selects between using the TV's own speakers or speakers connected to the receiver itself. I suspect you have it set to the former right now.

Actually, I just got the manual from Retrevo and he's right. WTF? :palm:

Steve, if you can take that back, I would. You could do a lot better getting a higher-end, last-gen receiver for not much more money. That would let you pass everything over HDMI and get the full benefit from the lossless audio tracks on Blu-ray discs -- which that Yammy won't decode either.

Maybe not. I have a Pioneer Elite (VSX-90TXH) that has HDMI inputs and it will not procees audio through these inputs. Stupid fucking idea IMO. I have to use the multi-channel inputs (analog) to get HD audio. swt61, does your Yamaha have multi-channel inputs and if so does it process HD audio. Also does the Oppo have multi-channel outputs.

Hmm that's weird. My Pioneer unit processes audio through the HDMI inputs. Can't you use toslink or coax instead for audio, with HDMI just for video, and still get surround?

Yes I can. But it will be Dolby Digital or DTS. No HD audio formats. My Pioneer Elite is the bottom level unit for the year it was manufactured. From what I can tell it was abandoned from their lineup very quickly and clearanced out (gave 400 for mine). Probably because of the stupid ass design. It looks to me like the Yamaha has a multi-channel decoder and is capable of processing Dolby True HD, so if swt61 is willing to run 6 fucking audio cables he can get HD audio. I am doing that with my Pioneer and it sucks but it is what it is.

The only other thing I can think of is that you need to set your DVD player (Oppo?) to output audio on its HDMI output -- sometimes that's an option.

Toslink or coax will work for DVD, but not DVD-Audio nor SACD nor Blu-Ray, I don't think.

Confused on this receiver (Yamaha). Found 1 review that says it processes Dolby True HD and 1 that says no. Anybody know for sure?

If it doesn't that sucks. To me the biggest improvement I notice in Bluray is the audio. Can see some improvement in the video but the audio improvement is much more noticeable.

It's not the settings in the Oppo, because it will play audio via the HDMI jacks through the TVs speakers.

The multi channel input on the receiver will not work with the sound field settings, so again no 5.1 with Blu-ray. And the digital input will only work in "straight" 2 channel mode (at least with the Oppo I own). This is the stupidest design I've ever encountered!

I most likely can't return it, because I bought it from an eBay dealer, but I'll check into that.

At any rate I want to buy a receiver that will output 5.1 to the receivers speaker outputs via HDMI. I guess I was an asshat for assuming any HDMI receiver would do this.

Which Denon would you recommend? I'd like to stay under the $500.00 mark if possible.

You want a denon, onkyo, the new sherwood newcastle thing, or the new sony

all of which definitely do audio over hdmi. Including native sacd.

Thanks Kevin.

I'll look into all of the above.

Anyone want a sucky Yamaha cheap? :P

I believe RX-V365s don't decode HD audio, but the RX-V465 can decode HD format.

RX-V465BL

Understood, however Yamaha has left a sour taste in my mouth at this point.

The 607 is the sweet spot in the Onkyo line, in my opinion. Gets you the much better MultEQ room correction.

The new Denons look like a lot of receiver for the money, too. In the budget category, you'd have to work hard to beat the feature set of the AVR590.
