grawk Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 OK, thanks Dan. So I will go with 8GB RAM over 2.2Ghz processor. Do you think the 256GB SSD is just completely overpriced and I should stick with the 128GB? By the way, does opening up the Unibody Macs and installing a new HD/RAM void the warranty? I suspect it does. Not unless you break something when you're doing it. By law you're allowed to modify things without voiding the warranty except where they can prove you caused the problem
Voltron Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 That's cool! It makes most sense to swap from the included HDD to a better SSD, right? JP just did that for my Mac Mini and it is such a great thing. I wonder if the RAM price difference is worth doing as well.
grawk Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 The owned by the school thing makes it more problematic. If someone else is paying, just have apple do it
Voltron Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 The owned by the school thing makes it more problematic. If someone else is paying, just have apple do it I was definitely thinking the same way, along with "why not get it all" if the school is paying?
shellylh Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 (edited) Well, I don't have an unlimited amount of computer money... we are a university not a law firm. Ordered the 15" 2.0Ghz, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Antiglare HR display, 3yr Applecare, and 1 day shipping. Figure that I will try to be good and not put a bunch of stuff that I don't need on the HD. If I run low on room, I guess I will just get or have Apple install a new SSD HD when they are even cheaper. In the past I have loaded up the drive with music/pictures but since I keep these on separate HDs now it shouldn't be a problem I think. Can't wait to get it!!! Edited February 25, 2011 by shellylh
grawk Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 just store stuff you don't need all the time on a usb drive or on a network drive.

shellylh Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 (edited) How come my new computer isn't here. It has been almost 2 hours since I ordered it! Edited February 25, 2011 by shellylh
The Monkey Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 not only are third party SSDs cheaper, the sandforce based drives are much faster than what Apple sells. RAM price differences aren't so bad, nowadays, but i'd still get it third party. Which brands for SSD drives are the ones to get now?
Grahame Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 How come my new computer isn't here. It has been almost 2 hours since I ordered it! You should have used App Store Express! http://scoopertino.com/announcing-app-store-express-the-fastest-way-to-give-apple-your-money/

crappyjones123 Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 blah still shitty resolution on the 13" was secretly hoping that they would improve it so i wouldnt have to get the 15".
crappyjones123 Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 are thunderbolt - vga/dvi cables available in some secret corner of the website? i cant find it anywhere.
Voltron Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 are thunderbolt - vga/dvi cables available in some secret corner of the website? i cant find it anywhere. To quote Wired: Thunderbolt plugs have the same shape as the Mini DisplayPort connectors in all recent Macs, and it’s compatible with them, so you can plug an older monitor into a new Thunderbolt port (even using a DVI, HDMI or VGA adapter) and it will still work. You won’t have a data channel, but the video connection will function.
postjack Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 How come my new computer isn't here. It has been almost 2 hours since I ordered it! i would start a paypal/cc dispute immediately just in case.
shellylh Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Absolutely, I have started 5 of them already.
postjack Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Anyone ever bought a used Mac laptop on eBay? I've long tinkered with the notion of having a laptop to play around with (web browsing in the den and on the road, homework, etc) ever since my old HP died 4 years ago, and recently I thought about buying previous generation Mac stuff used. With the new MBPs out I figure the market should be flooded soon with older MBPs. Is there a better outlet then eBay?
postjack Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Apple laptops tend to keep their value pretty well, i don't know if you're going to find a great deal. Browsing eBay, I'm starting to get that impression. But hell if I can save $400 buying an older model it might be worth it to me.
grawk Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 the better way to do it is probably craigslist, so you can do it face to face. Also more likely to get a good deal.
Pars Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 We bought a 13" MBP on CL, nearly new for $1K. Probably comparably priced to the refurbs at the Apple store, maybe a bit less. Apple Store refurbs I bought my G5 Powermac on the Apple store, refurb and have never had any problems with it (3 years?). It looked new when I got it.
