HeadphoneAddict Posted October 18, 2014 Report Posted October 18, 2014 nope, that is what I am pissed about! I hate Apple sometimes
morphsci Posted October 19, 2014 Report Posted October 19, 2014 I have the sidebar in itunes 12. Just go to playlists. 1
luvdunhill Posted October 19, 2014 Report Posted October 19, 2014 I've been waiting for these to come out to replace my my MBP that recently died. Now, I'm not sure what I am going to do. The previous gen quad-core mini isn't all that bad. I expect improvements with the OS upgrade, etc.
shellylh Posted October 21, 2014 Report Posted October 21, 2014 I saw that bhphoto is still selling 2012 quad core Minis. Then I realized that I would need to upgrade the RAM and HD (to a SSD) and that would be close to $1200 after upgrades (and the SSD install looks like a PITA). Then I decided I might as well get a 21.5 iMac at that price. Then I decided that by the time I got 16gb of RAM and a 256 SSD HD, I would up to around $1600 so I might as well look at the 27" iMac since I would like to have a larger monitor anyway. Then after the upgrades to that I decided that I should just get the new 27" Retina 5K iMac... I stopped before getting to the Mac Pro. 3
crappyjones123 Posted October 22, 2014 Report Posted October 22, 2014 (edited) My hackintosh is running great. Installed Yosemite using Clover yesterday. Everything except iMessages works splendidly. I can send and receive SMS but not iMessages. Far more stable than Mavericks which had frequent crashes. No crashes so far. You should investigate the avenue Shelly. For $1600 you are well on your way towards a kickass rig. The initial headache is there in trying to get everything set up but once it is there, it is rock solid. Depends on whether the headache is worth saving the extra $500-$1000. Edited October 22, 2014 by crappyjones123 1
shellylh Posted October 22, 2014 Report Posted October 22, 2014 I keep thinking about a Hackintosh... but then I realize I don't want a machine that I have to tinker with to get to work right, I just want something that works. 3
crappyjones123 Posted October 22, 2014 Report Posted October 22, 2014 Unfortunately, no tinkering and works out the box = iMac/Mac Pro. :<
crappyjones123 Posted October 23, 2014 Report Posted October 23, 2014 Damn that would make the perfect machine for photo editing were it not for the graphics card.
Salt Peanuts Posted October 23, 2014 Report Posted October 23, 2014 Damn that would make the perfect machine for photo editing were it not for the graphics card. If you are just using LR, you don't need a dedicated GPU as it doesn't use it. 1
grawk Posted October 23, 2014 Report Posted October 23, 2014 Photoshop would work just fine on that system as well.
Salt Peanuts Posted October 23, 2014 Report Posted October 23, 2014 ^ Probably true, but most Intel integrated GPUs are not supported under current version of Photoshop and some features may not work at all.

Salt Peanuts Posted October 23, 2014 Report Posted October 23, 2014 I didn't remember seeing anything below HD4600 under supported/tested list, but guess I was wrong.
crappyjones123 Posted October 23, 2014 Report Posted October 23, 2014 Supported and the thing running smoothly on a 27" monitor are two different things. Windows 8 runs on some really old hardware does not mean it is desirable. I was using my macbook air to feed the 27" monitor with LR/PS which was running the Intel HD 5000. Every single slider movement took ~1 second hence the move to a Hackintosh.
luvdunhill Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 But you have more than double the CPU power with the mini, correct?
morphsci Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 But you have more than double the CPU power with the mini, correct? Woah! Watch it there fella, you're brandishing some dangerous logic.
grawk Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 Given that it was probably a memory constraint with the air, it hardly seems to matter. But I'm sure crappy's probably right.
crappyjones123 Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 But you have more than double the CPU power with the mini, correct? And a weaker graphics card which doesn't help with PS. Also, benchmark of the 2012 mac mini isn't that much better than the 2013 macbook air, double the CPU power and all. Source - http://browser.primatelabs.com/mac-benchmarks
luvdunhill Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 You mean if you don't click on the multicore benchmarks? 1
shellylh Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 I suppose the non-retina iMacs aren't going to be refreshed for quite a while. I read that the 5th gen Intel processors wouldn't come out until 2016. If that is true I'm guessing there is no reason to wait before getting a new iMac. I haven't decided that is what I want to do but it would be nice to have a 27" monitor. How annoying is a glossy monitor? (I'm not going to get the 5K.)
cetoole Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 Matte is absolutely mandatory for me. Also, nothing I have read about the next gen Intel processors made me excited for anything but battery life, which doesn't matter in a desktop.
morphsci Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 I am very impressed with my 27" iiMac. It is pretty amazing compared to my older Mac Pro, especially given their prices when new.
shellylh Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 Thanks Colin. Do you have an i5 or i7 Jim?
morphsci Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 ... Do you have an i5 or i7 Jim? i7 or I would have to leave Head-Case. 1
