Grahame Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 In other news, my impressions have made it to JHA Anybody know who the mysterious Z.R. is?
Hopstretch Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 I want a dead silent tube amp. It's possible that there is no such animal. You have a nice rack great setup!

Grahame Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 I want a dead silent tube amp. Try unplugging it from the mains.
shellylh Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 Try unplugging it from the mains. Not funny.
Dusty Chalk Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 Those tubes are huge!Anybody know who the mysterious Z.R. is?Looks like an exclamation point at the end, too.
cclragnarok Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 Using sensitive headphones like Grados, my SQ-84 hums/buzzes maybe 70% of the time at home. I tried using the amp at work, and there's no hum/buzz at all. So now I have a 30-pound tube amp sitting on my office desk. I guess dirty power is probably the cause of the problem at home. The power choke is close to one of the output transformers, which is probably why I only get the hum/buzz in one channel.

veloaudio Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 Might want to try moving it away from the Cary, just to see. The Cary almost certainly has transformers in it. Looks like the Cary might be the source. Not through the XLRs but the proximity of the Beta to the Cary. I don't really have a whole lot of arrangement options in my current setup
cetoole Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 Spacer between beta and Cary? I dunno what your setup looks like, but 1" could definitely make a difference. I know it does for me, 6-10dB worth.
Dusty Chalk Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 I'm wondering if there's a way that you can shield one from the other. Ground a sheet of tin foil between the two? EDIT: Colin beat me to another point that I just thought of -- well, maybe I had the thought because I read Colin's post...but yeah -- inverse square law comes to mind.
cetoole Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 Tin foil wouldnt help for EMI. A reasonable chunk of steel, very thick (like 5/8") aluminum, or maybe mu-metal or some similar high permeability metal might. Simple space is the best really.
mypasswordis Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 1" could definitely make a difference. I know it does for me, 6-10dB worth. That's what she said Tin foil hats are awesome, they keep aliens from reading your mind and you get a free burrito at Chipotle one day of the year.
justin Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 Wait, what? What day of the year? You'll still have to pay for the bottle of Chipotlaway
mypasswordis Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 The day of the year they give free burritos if you wear tin foil on your person, aka Free Burrito Day. People usually end up looking something like but there are much more creative designs out there. Billy Mays, nooooooooooooo
veloaudio Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 (edited) Well troubleshooting has come to screaching halt. The Cary has given up the ghost No longer wants to play CD's, says an HDCD is in the tray when it isn't and toslink sounds like total ass (thin, echo sound; like a weak FM radio station). At least I have my Marantz CD5001 that I can hook up. Damn, what a night.... Drafting my RMA email to Cary now edit: WTF, I unplugged Cary and let it sit for a few minutes. Now it is working fine Edited December 2, 2009 by veloaudio huh
cetoole Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 So what, "DC" heaters, meaning bridge rectifier and fairly small CRC filter? Hard to tell from that pic.

Now it is working fine It may have gotten hit by some static and just needed to reset itself. Anyways, the CD5001 is not a bad backup player, and I've been very happy with mine for 2 years now.
shellylh Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 So what, "DC" heaters, meaning bridge rectifier and fairly small CRC filter? Hard to tell from that pic. Here are some bigger pictures I found on HF of a "custom" WA5-LE (LE version has no speaker or K1000 output). I can open mine (completely stock except for tubes) up and take some pictures of mine at some point but I am supposed to be working right now. According to the owner, custom means: - Woo Audio Premium Parts Upgrade - 2x Yamamoto UX4 Gold Sockets - 4x Yamamoto Octal Gold Sockets - 4 pair WBT-0210 Cu Ms RCA Sockets - Alps RK-50 HighEnd Potentiometer (So no real changes to the circuit I guess.)

Anyways, the CD5001 is not a bad backup player, and I've been very happy with mine for 2 years now. I agree about the CD5001 but the Cary is at another level for me. Even though the Cary seems to be working fine (for now) I think it will be going in for a checkup anyway.
shellylh Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 Good news here. I moved the amp and ps so they are 6" away from one another (farthest I could move them without completely changing my setup). The hum is almost completely gone with the HD800 (didn't try the JH13's) in the high jack (and completely silent in the low jack - like it was before). There is still a very slight amount of hum in the left channel but the right channel seems to be silent. At least I am making progress. I think this calls for a ....
