Yesterday, I decided to build some acoustic paneling by following Ray Ortega’s Youtube tutorial: https://youtu.be/NvWUEXtT2js
I picked up the supplies from Home Depot (wood, Rockwool Safe’n’Sound insulation, roll of lawn/weed barrier) and Fabricland (guess who’s now a Fabricland member?) and went to work! It took about four hours (largely because I had to use a mitre box and hand saw instead of compound mitre saw for all of the cuts) to make the two panels once I began work with the supplies in-hand.

Dividing the total raw materials cost by the amount used for each panel, they came to about $43.30 CAD per panel. To go from wanting to build them to having them built and placed in my room within the course of an afternoon is really satisfying.

I need to go back and A/B with/without to really compare, but a difference after placement was easily apparent: the sound is tighter and clearer, and I’m motivated to continue treating the room (more acoustic panels and corner bass traps).

My home theatre/audio setup is as follows:

LR: KEF Q950

😄 KEF Q100

Sub: SVS SB-1000

LR Surrounds: Klipsch Synergy S-20

AVR: Denon X2400H

Learnings from the DIY build:

The step that took the longest was cutting the 1x4 and 1x3 boards using a mitre box and handsaw. I’m looking online for a used or new circular saw or compound mitre saw before building any more.
I think I barely bought enough fabric and had to stretch it a little too thin to wrap all the way around the frame; you can see the edges of the 1x4 through the fabric which I wanted to avoid.
Within the Youtube tutorial’s comments, someone mentioned that two 1x3 cross beams is just as good as the single 1x3 cross beam combined with the four 45-degree 1x3 corner braces (which were hell to hand-cut). When I build more I will try this viewer’s recommendation.

JBL cabinets make me chuckle.

I had JBL L100's around for decades. Not the last word in sound. But back in the 70's they were a must have.

I’m on work furlough, so I decided to move all of my equipment in to my living room for a demo and a photo. Never has my buying problem been more evident to me.

The LX521s are designed by the late Siegfried Linkwitz. You can read about them here: https://www.linkwitzlab.com/LX521/Description.htm. They’re an active, 4-way, open baffle design, and by far my favorite.

Main 2-Channel System:

DAC/Pre/DSP: miniDSP 4x10 Hd
Amp: (DIY) 8x Hypex UcD180HG w/2x SMPS1200

5.1 System:
LR: Dali Ikon 6 MK1
😄 Dali Ikon Vokal 2 MK1
Rears: Dali Ikon On-Wall MK1
SW: REL R-505
Amp: Operetta AP5140A-S

Revel F208 speakers, Emotiva XPS-1 preamp, Emotiva XPA-2 amplifier, Michell Gyro SE turntable w/SME 309 (stereo) & Rega/Michell (mono cart for jazz older than me) tonearms, and an Audio Technica AT33EV cartridge playing this Rush album. The box on top of the preamp is a Perpetual Technologies Modwright III DAC for the digital feed. That may not sound like something if you're younger than 120 years old, but if it sounds good, it is good! And it is good. Stereo SVS SB-12 NSD subwoofers are crossed over @60Hz.

I picked up Paradigm Studio 100's a couple months ago but they didn't sound that great in my room. I rotated the room layout to get more separation and it is 100% better in terms of imaging, clarity, and bass response.

I was using a Denon AVR but added my aunt's late-70's Nakamichi 730 receiver so I am now using that as the amp for the 100's. It has a bit warmer, fuller sound with its 105W @ 0.02% THD. It added even more oomph on the bottom end as well and helps free up power for movies too.

I'm looking to upgrade the sub next and while I love deep bass, I'm in a townhouse so I have to keep things reasonable for my neighbor's sake. Until then, I've got her Nakamichi 680 cassette deck to hook up and test next.

Setup:

Denon AVR-X3200W
Nakamichi 730 vintage receiver used as amp for L/R
5.1.2 Atmos setup:
L/R: Paradigm Studio 100 v3 floorstanders
😄 Paradigm Studio CC-570 v3
Surrounds: Paradigm Atoms
Subwoofer: temporarily a Monoprice sub (looking at Hsu, SVS, PSA, or Rythmik)
Front Height: Tiny Monoprice thingies
TV: Panasonic Plasma, 54"
Monster PowerCenter 3500
