skullguise Posted July 14, 2015 Report Posted July 14, 2015 Those speakers look like they could be used for Jacob's avatar....pretty nice stuff. I luv the Electron Luv amps up front, too (unless someone else is copying that style)
Craig Sawyers Posted July 14, 2015 Report Posted July 14, 2015 No idea what they are, But they ought to be christened the PornoHorn 1
JimL Posted July 16, 2015 Report Posted July 16, 2015 I'm probably being old fashioned, but those look like speakers from a really bad acid trip. 1
Craig Sawyers Posted July 16, 2015 Report Posted July 16, 2015 Just for Jacob, Sound-Lab A-1 Electrostatics
swt61 Posted July 16, 2015 Report Posted July 16, 2015 Wait, shouldn't that tweeter be mounted higher?
mikeymad Posted July 16, 2015 Report Posted July 16, 2015 leads to the awkward conversation about weight vs transient highs.
Grahame Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 I didn't think ESL's were all about the b-ass.
naamanf Posted August 16, 2015 Report Posted August 16, 2015 Meh, doesn't look set up for Dolby Atmos. 1
Dusty Chalk Posted August 16, 2015 Report Posted August 16, 2015 Hmmm...hadn't noticed that, you're right, it's rather 2 dimensional. Not even D'Appolito.
Grahame Posted October 6, 2015 Report Posted October 6, 2015 Meanwhile ... http://www.bang-olufsen.com/en/sound/loudspeakers/beolab-90
Dusty Chalk Posted October 6, 2015 Report Posted October 6, 2015 If I could have a soulmate that was a pair of speakers, that's what they'd look like.
ironbut Posted February 12, 2016 Report Posted February 12, 2016 Had a great evening of listening at a AES ( Audio Engineering Society) SF event. It was held at the new Coast Mastering facility in the Fantasy Records building in Berkeley. http://www.coastmastering.com/ The pictures don't really show how big the surround room is with three big ass Focal Utopias up front and a couple of really nice Focal LS-9's in the rear channels. It is huge and high! The smaller mastering suite isn't too shabby either. Probably the best imaging I've witnessed. There were about a dozen of us and we were asked to bring projects to share. I guess if I'd really thought about it I might have realized that just about everyone there were industry veterans with amazing recordings somewhere along the way to being released. The first guy had an orchestral/choral premier that was recorded at the new San Francisco Conservatory of Music. There were several engineers from Fantasy and one had a fresh jazz mix for a release from Concord. He couldn't say who the players were but they were killing! There was plenty of shop talk between tracks and I'm happy to say that only a little bit was "totally" over my head. I was also relieved that my recording wasn't ripped. We ended the night doing comparisons of the stereo and surround versions of the latest "Amused to Death". Not worthy! 6
Dusty Chalk Posted February 12, 2016 Report Posted February 12, 2016 Very cool. I'm a big Focal fanboy, and can only fantasize about hearing a surround facility with Focal Utopias. One of these days, I'll get myself a pair of big Focals. My very realistic goal for a long time was a pair of simple 3-ways...Alto? Diva?...something like that.
mikeymad Posted February 12, 2016 Report Posted February 12, 2016 Nice Steve - sounds like a fun time.

Back in the day (1972/3) I worked on a Saturday in an audio store in Newcastle (UK). The Beogram 4000 had just been introduced with a parallel tracking arm. Apart from zero tracking error, the customer benefit was its total immunity to mistracking as a result of shock. I used to demonstrate that by thumping the deck as hard as I could with my fist while a record was playing. It was one hell of a deck.
spritzer Posted February 12, 2016 Report Posted February 12, 2016 Back in the day B&O were excellent but now, not so much. Ever since the 80's they have been on a steady downward spiral. Since the last two distributors for them in Iceland have been friends of the family I've seen the insides of most of their gear and yeah... it's not good. The Icepower stuff is quite good but they have a pretty warped world view. The old stuff is amazing though. My aunt still uses one of those table top systems since the 70's and it works great to this day.
naamanf Posted February 12, 2016 Report Posted February 12, 2016 I also love those big BE Utopias, one of my favorite speakers next to the MBL 101 X-treme. 1
ironbut Posted February 12, 2016 Report Posted February 12, 2016 The Utopias are really seamless. It could be the worlds greatest single driver if you didn't know better. And they go low low low! That classical piece they played was amazing sounding. The image height of the stage seemed like it was 25' tall. 1
