I mean, easier, legal way that doesn't require loss of domicile and acquisitions. And more patience than I have. Besides, I thought it was Ray's amps that burned things down, not Mikhail's...?

Why use the 6CA7 again? I don't follow.

not the PA42, but stumbled upon plenty of these for beans:

I was more curious on how it compares to the AC coupled amplifier.

If you are going thru all the trouble to make an all dc coupled all tube amp,

then you might as well scale up the output tubes to handle more voltage and

power.

Those 3583's went out of production 10 years ago.(probably more than 10 years)

If you can find them dirt cheap, then give it a go. You will need sockets for those

parts which may be hard to find.

You might actually have better luck using DHT's for the outputs, as the gate voltage

will be much less...

Also remember that this lifts the output voltage to +300 dc. Which means the bias is

is now +850 dc. Some people seem to get a bit nervous with that...

the two power switches are for each side, left and right channels???

also he should take the glass off and use it like a shield for on the tube sockets like the b52 has,

Looks like one power switch is for "stand-by" mode, and the glass is removable.

* From a cold start, the dual power switch protects the tubes from a high current surge. Turning on just one of the power switches provides low voltage to the heaters while the unit remains in stand-by mode. Turning on both power switches allows the unit to function properly.

interesting idea. Seems that you'd be running the opamp very close to its limit.

Even lists electrostatic transducers as a typical application. Datasheet is prelim though, but at least it's a new production device. Wonder if I can get "samples". Looks to be a pretty impressive little device.

That's simply brilliant! Perhaps the Stax mafia should change it's name to the Arcy Sparky brigade. :D

Ps. This brings back ford memories of yesterday afternoon when I watched 2000uf@350v explode a few inches in front of my face, messing up my vision a bit and burning a hole in my table. :-[

Blah, wimps!! Just replace the air inside the drivers with some of the stuff Dayton-Wright used and we'll be fine. ;)

AH HA... stink gas... sulfur hexafluoride

I had a pair of those a long time back. motorola piezo tweeters inside the air bags.

As i remember the gas gave about a 5db gain boost.

mskennedy... you kidding right.... those are military boys. their prices are 3 times

that of apex...

They were really ahead of their time with that gas idea. Soundlab is just catching up with their teflon coated diaphragms.

So.... if we used those chips then the amp would be mil-spec? Sounds like a plan!!

OMG it has a stand-by switch! thats so money! I remember speaker tube amps having those also..thats badass. keep the bad boy warmed up then full blast only when in use..

Can't comment on any technical aspects of the amp obviously, but I do like the look/design a lot, especially the power supply. It's simple and classy, not overblinged like a certain amp builder's stuff. Now I'm just waiting for (or dreading more likely) the final price.

that's not any red polish, that's conformal coating... ok, nail polish.

Anyways, I guess I'm curious to know if:

A.) Kevin's new all DHT amp uses HV opamps

B.) If the older DC coupled version, perhaps with DHT output, is worth building

Obviously, there's only one person who can answer this :)

A. NOPE. No sand except in the power supply. Power supply could in fact be

all tubes. Will show a picture of the ultra isolated multi channel filament supply

at some point. Its really cute.

B. Its a real bear to build. I only know of 3 total working units. Voltage compliance

at the front end is very tight, and you have to pick very well matched input tubes.
