Hopstretch
I've been using Max quite happily for all my codec switching needs for a while, but have recently found it's crashing when asked to chew 24-bit FLAC files and spit out MPEG4. Have been working around by using AIFF instead, which works fine, but just wondering if anyone knows if this is a limitation of the converter or the output format? Thanks. Currawong
Are they 2-channel or 5.1? I found I couldn't use Max for SACD rips, but are fine for, say, 24/92 2-channel music from Linn Records.
aardvark baguette
Whether on pc or mac, all the 24bit vinyl rips I've converted recently work best when made to aiff in 3rd party programs, then from aiff to alac inside of itunes. 16bit alac works just fine in other programs, but for whatever reason 24bit works best in itunes, in my experience. grawk
max uses alac from itunes
Hopstretch
Any reason then, other than file size (ok, and consistency), to go the extra step and convert AIFF to ALAC?
aardvark baguette
prolly not. I dont remember if aiff supports album art, but I'm pretty anal about keeping that stuff up to date.
Hopstretch
After looking around a bit and trying a few things, I have found that XLD does what I want pretty much flawlessly. Recommended.
Hopstretch
XLD is what i use most of the time. And you were keeping that to yourself?
Hopstretch
i've mentioned XLD before. I guess I'll have to start actually listening to you.
ingwe
Whether on pc or mac, all the 24bit vinyl rips I've converted recently work best when made to aiff in 3rd party programs, then from aiff to alac inside of itunes. 16bit alac works just fine in other programs, but for whatever reason 24bit works best in itunes, in my experience. max uses alac from itunes I did not know that. This comforts me. Today, for some reason Max would not properly convert my AIFF files to ALAC. The resultant AIFFs were roughly about 1/3 larger than the original AIFFs and were not listenable. I reinstalled Max and check settings for my workflow. Tried several things with no joy until I up dragged the AIFFs into iTunes, then converting them to ALAC worked fine. Fucking software. HeadphoneAddict
That is helpful info here. I had to switch to Xact to get my 24/96 files into AIFF, since Max started to choke on them when making them into ALAC.
