tkam Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 I've seen a few Cary SLI 80s go for pretty decent prices on audiogon lately. Been thinking about picking one up to use as a headphone amp and to drive a pair of monitors in a secondary rig. Does anyone have experience with it as a headphone amp? Is it good with all phones? Or just low or high impedance phones?
postjack Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 I'm pretty sure the SLI 80 is the one Moon Audio had at Canjam. IMO it was a bit too lush for my taste, but take into account I was listening a D5000 which probably wasn't a good match. Also I think maybe tyrion owned one of these?
IceClass Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Also I think maybe tyrion owned one of these? Well yeah, but is there anything he hasn't owned?
4N6 Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 I got one and it sounds great with the DX1000's and the K1000's. Not so good with the W5000's.
bhd812 Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 Todd R had one for a bit, might want to ask him...
jp11801 Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 I've heard this amp and it is good but not great. Add a star for decent power and versitility but the sonics are average IMO
utep10 Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 Very versitle for the headphone/speaker thing but also the on the fly Ultralinear and Triode switch. It was on the warm side and in my opinion a little lacking in dynamics too. Per Dennis Had (Sp?), AMB changed a resistor that added more voltage to one of the signal tubes, don't remember which one, and then also used some SP Slam Adapters for using 5687s for the 6SN7s. These changes all helped but never got me satisfied. Headphone jack was just OK, not bad but nothing really special either.
