GPH Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 For music purpose (and maybe a little bit of simple Wordprocessing at the same time) is it: 1) an obligation to change the 5400 rpm HD for a 7200 rpm HD? No, but go for the 7200 anyway if the price difference is not too big, you'll appreciate the faster speed. 2) an obligation to go from 2g to 4g memory? Yes, but don't buy it from Apple.
grawk Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 for a music server, you don't need a faster drive or more memory. 2gb and a 5400 rpm drive is fine. People like to upgrade for no discernable reason other than the ability to say theirs is faster. For music, it just doesn't matter.
Genetic Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 Seems we have a split decision... Many thanks. It's clearer now and anyway I choose it seems I'll end up with a few more $ in my pocket just in case.......Van Der Graaf is visiting us this summer in Qu
morphsci Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 I'm using the previous generation Mac Mini with the slower processor, 1Gb Ram and the 80Gb HD. It is more than fast enough and I have noticed absolutely nothing that would indicate any need to upgrade anything except for perhaps the shitty monitor I'm using because I was trying to do this as cheaply as possible.

I'm shallow, and I'm at peace with that.
grawk Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 If you're getting the new mac mini (with the video chipset), you'll be able to do 1080p video straight out of the box, with the slow drive and 2gb of ram. That's significantly more taxing than anything you'll do with audio short of a protools setup...

Hopstretch Posted March 8, 2009 Author Report Posted March 8, 2009 it sure does Though it would be easier if they'd included HDMI out instead of mini-DVI. But that would undercut the Apple TV I guess.
Knuckledragger Posted March 8, 2009 Report Posted March 8, 2009 Monoprice will sell you an DVI to HDMI cable for teh cheep.
guzziguy Posted March 8, 2009 Report Posted March 8, 2009 I'm sure that ALO will see you a videophile version for slightly more.
Hopstretch Posted March 8, 2009 Author Report Posted March 8, 2009 Monoprice will sell you an DVI to HDMI cable for teh cheep. But it will still not carry teh sound.
grawk Posted March 8, 2009 Report Posted March 8, 2009 There will probably be a MDP to hdmi that includes sound at some point. My understanding is it's in the spec.
Knuckledragger Posted March 8, 2009 Report Posted March 8, 2009 Until then, I assume the new Mini still has an optical digital output.
Dusty Chalk Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 He said "decent".Buh? I mean, unless you're not into black...
aardvark baguette Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 Buh? I mean, unless you're not into black... I meant I'd prefer a more flat black. The colorware black is downright cartoonish, imo. Most of their colors are a bit harsh, kind of like cheap unmixed tempera paint that they use in school art programs, but with a ton of gloss on top.
Dusty Chalk Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 (shrug) I'm a pianist, so of course I love a nice glossy piano black.
aardvark baguette Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 Its all preference, etc, etc. The pic above probably illustrates my point better. The shades they choose are far from the shades I'd choose. They seem hyper saturated/exaggerated/over the top.
Dusty Chalk Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 In other words, Apple-y? Again: (shrug) I don't care about too many of the colors, so I tend not to stand in judgment. PS They do, indeed, have a flat black, as well as the "metallic".
Genetic Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 I sent an iPod at Colorware not too long ago and was a bit surprise by the lack of refinement the paint was showing. On the other hand they are offering to do your own personal choice. So it can be ask something like: Please do a ''classy job'' with my audio gear I'm not street racing with it... Amicalement
