Hopstretch Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Nice spec bumps and, to the delight of Duet fans everywhere, they kept Firewire. The addition of a discrete graphics card should now make this a decent video, as well as audio, server.
morphsci Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Now it makes make sense as to why I got my Mac Mini so cheap. Nice upgrades but nothing to make me lust for one since I use it as a music server and to have a Mac available at work.
aardvark baguette Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 That nvidia chipset is supposed to be fantastic. I'm super tempted to get one of these for work music playback. And anoter firewire drobo. And a duet
grawk Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Don't get a firewire drobo for use with the duet. Heavy disk activity on the firewire bus gives the duet fits.
aardvark baguette Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Don't get a firewire drobo for use with the duet. Heavy disk activity on the firewire bus gives the duet fits. whoa, I had no idea. Thanks for the heads up
grawk Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 I should sell my usb drobo and mini, and try and pick up an older mac pro or xserv.
aardvark baguette Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 now that i think about it, there's only one firewire port on it anyway.
grawk Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 right, you have to daisy chain, which is what I think caused the problems I was having.
Hopstretch Posted March 3, 2009 Author Report Posted March 3, 2009 right, you have to daisy chain, which is what I think caused the problems I was having. That's the pisser with the new iMacs, too, which now have only a single FW800 port. On my current one, I can run the Duet off the 400 and external drives off the 800 with no problems at all. OT, but fuck me the new Pros are expensive!
Hopstretch Posted March 3, 2009 Author Report Posted March 3, 2009 OK, fuck me the new Pros are even more expensive!
penger Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 They seem to be moving away from full sized keyboards too.
grawk Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 They sell full sized and compact keyboards. And you can use any bluetooth or usb keyboard. Not sure what the problem is.
grawk Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 OK, fuck me the new Pros are even more expensive! They're actually $300 less than the old ones.
penger Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 They sell full sized and compact keyboards. And you can use any bluetooth or usb keyboard. Not sure what the problem is. I'm afraid that now that they've introduced the compact wired one, they'll phase out the full sized one.
grawk Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 People said that about firewire too... but even if they do, there are LOTS of good keyboards out there. You're not limited to what apple sells. I like the smaller keyboards, honestly.
Hopstretch Posted March 3, 2009 Author Report Posted March 3, 2009 They're actually $300 less than the old ones. Which had two quad core processors, versus just one in the new cheaper base model.
penger Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 I can understand why they're going small, but when I do data entry and stuff, it really helps to have a num pad. I've actually been thinking about the Logitech diNovo keyboard (full sized one).
grawk Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 No, the previous base had 2 dual core, now it has 1 quad.
Hopstretch Posted March 3, 2009 Author Report Posted March 3, 2009 You are right. I thought they had the Harpertowns. Edit: What am I missing?
Hopstretch Posted March 3, 2009 Author Report Posted March 3, 2009 Want. New. MacPro. Permit me to suggest this one:

GPH Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 The Mac Minis are great, I'd get one if I didn't already have a MacBook. In fact, if Apple ever decides to release a netbook, I'd sell the MacBook and get the netbook for work/school and a Mini at home. That'd be the perfect computer setup for me.
