thrice Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 I haven't tried it yet..... yet, but I'd like to. I'm getting tired of lugging my Macbook to and from work. It would need to run a few other programs for me to really use it, but it sounds like that can happen.
Grand Enigma Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 Most Netbooks are rather noisy when their tiny fans are plugging along to keep them cool. You might be better off with a used 14"-15" laptop as their fans are a bit bigger and dont run quite as often. My wife Lenovo s10 is pretty noisy when in use while my R61 is dead quiet 99% of the time.

hYdrociTy Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 Hmm, would it be that stressed when youre watching movies? The atom processor doesnt seem to be that weak my 1.5 penitum m gets choppy with some kinds of 780p, 1080p is unplayable (i guess 780p is max for that kind of screen). Coreavc helps if you play 780p movies on the little thing.

If you want better video support go with the Wind because it's still the only netbook with a proper O/C feature. 720p video and the core codec are smooth and fine with the +24% clockspeed.

grawk Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 The dell mini9 runs leopard really well, too.
padam Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 I have the MSI Wind U120 and it is a perfectly fine netbook (if a bit cheaply made, but very cheap), however if I wanted to buy a new netbook now, I would rather wait for the new GN40 chipset with the updated CPU. Much better energy consumption and a huge boost in graphics performance.
Duggeh Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 Is there any ETA on Nvidia ION netbooks? Thats a sweet little bit of technology.
padam Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 Summer, I suppose. I think the ION is better suited to small desktop PCs because it won't have the same low power consumption as the GN40.
Dash Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 From what I've read, the Atom processor falls between the Celeron and Dual Core in terms of performance.
deepak Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 From what I've read, the Atom processor falls between the Celeron and Dual Core in terms of performance. That sort of sounds like a Pentium M? (Centrino) IIRC I remember reading the 1.8 GHz Pentium M was roughly equivalent to the Socket 478 Pentium 4 3.06 GHz.
Duggeh Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 From what I've read, the Atom processor falls between the Celeron and Dual Core in terms of performance. The Atom is closer to an Athlon XP in performance. Maybe a 2500+ Barton. It's basically a Pentium Pro on steriods. It isn't close to a Core processor.
Dash Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 In absolutes (frequency to frequency) it tests slower, but in its current iterations, when compared with the Ms on the market, it should be roughly equivalent for basic computing.
padam Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 The Atom is no speed-freak, that's for sure. However, a netbook is excellent for music listening, especially with great little DACs like the Pico or the Gamma-1.

grawk Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 Shrug, the atoms aren't for gaming. For most other things, they're decent.
Dash Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 heh ... keep telling yourself that. I am not in the market for a netbook and have no desire for any self delusion. Based on the benchmarks Ive seen, it would be roughly equivalent to a basic notebook for basic computing. Plus the new chipset is capable of HD video(not that the stellar resolution of the screens would support it).
Smeggy Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 It looks like a cool toy, and the price is certainly nice.
hungrych Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 A little bit OT, but what do you guys generally use your netbooks for?

slwiser Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 A little bit OT, but what do you guys generally use your netbooks for? As a transportable music server and as a portable exercise lab using my new PC pod and Suunto heart rate monitor.
Duggeh Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 A little bit OT, but what do you guys generally use your netbooks for? Seminar notes. Working in the library. Occassional LANs.
morphsci Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 Music, general MSWord and Excel work, checking was'up at Headcase, updating my WebCT site and meeting notes using a bamboo tablet.
Smeggy Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 I use mine for everything I do. I no longer use a desktop at all.
